WACO, TX - The New Mexico State equestrian team ended its 2010-11 season on Thursday, after both the Hunter Seat and Western teams both fell in the opening round of the 2011 Varsity Equestrian National Championships, in Waco, Texas, at the Extraco Events Center.

The No. 12 seed Hunter Seat team took on No. 5 seed Texas A&M, falling 7-1, while the Western team, the No. 9 seed was tripped up by the No. 8 seed Baylor, 1-6-1.

“We came to nationals with our eyes on progressing to the championship,” head coach Audrey Buck (formally Van Eman) said. “Unfortunately, our rides were not strong enough in the judge's eyes to make that happen. I am still very happy with how this team performed. I have only had a short year to work with these ladies, to find their strengths and weaknesses, and look to improve upon them. We've started the work and now just need to perfect it. I am confident that with next year's returning class and the addition of a very strong recruiting class, we will have a successful year to come in 2012.”

In the Hunter Seat competition, Stephanie Gershon was the lone Aggie to win her head-to-head match-up. She defeated Texas A&M’s Maggie Earle, 130-124 in the Flat. All-American Chelsae Keyes struggled in the Equitation on the Flat competition, with a 134-111 loss to Kristin Bell but had a better outing in the Equitation over Fences ride despite not coming out on top. Keyes fell 143-139 to Emily Williams.

Brianna Raab put up a fight against Lia Chafee, dropping 152-145, while Erica Daniels lost in the Flat as well to Hannah Soibelman, 132-115. Amy Lang and Gershon both had solid rides in the Equitation over Fences competition. Lang fell just short to Chafee of A&M, 159-152, while Gershon was just three points behind Brooke Coleman, 143-140. Emily McConnell dropped her head-to-head match up to Kori Pickett, 162-149, wrapping up the Aggie competitors.

The Western team was led by the Horsemanship team, as Megan Gould scored the only point for the Aggies on the day. Gould defeated Ashley Garza of Baylor, 144-142. Chelsea Campbell didn’t go down without a fight as well, tying her competition, Chelsea Retmier, 143.5-143.5. Pamela Evans was defeated by Blair Bergeson, 144-132.5, while Kyra Cruse lost to Meghan Murphy, 152-141.

The Reining team was swept on the day but had some very solid rides. Breanne Bertrand battled Olivia Rodgers falling 136.5-134, while Campbell wrapped up her season with a 137-132.5 lose to Katrina Buss. Kate Goodwin ended her Aggie career as she was defeated by Amber Mooney, 140-131. Tara Wilson finished out her first year with the Aggies with a 138.5-124.5 loss to Barbara Aitken.

The Aggies end their season 6-8 overall.
