Aggies And Spartans Split Doubleheader

The Aggie baseball team split their doubleheader with San Jose State on Saturday afternoon collecting a 16-8 victory in seven innings in game one and falling 7-3 in game two. Wes Starkes finished the day 6-for-9 with a walk, three runs and two RBIs as he went a perfect 5-for-5 in game one.

GAME ONE: NM STATE 16, SAN JOSE STATE 8 (7)
The Aggies would grab the lead early in the bottom of the first as Wesley Starkes started off the game with a double to right field. Kurt Snowley would single to left field scoring Starkes from second. and would advance to second on the throw home. Tanner Waite would record a one out single to put runners at the corner and would advance to second on a wild pitch. A Chuck Howard walk would load the bases and Zac Fisher would deliver a single through the right side to score Voight and Waite giving the Aggies a 4-0 lead. The inning would end on a double play as Bryan Karraker would be robbed of a hit by first baseman Danny Stienstra on a line drive and Stienstra would double up Fisher at first.

The Spartans would put the first two hitters on base on back-to-back singles and Tyler Christian would deliver a home run to cut the Aggies' lead to 4-3. After starter Dan Reid hit Jacob Valdez with a pitch, Tim Quiery would single. A ground out by Danny Stienstra would move the runners to second and third and a Matt Lopez walk would load the bases. Matt Carroll would capitalize for the Spartans getting a single through the right side to drive in Valdez and Quiery putting SJSU up 5-4.

The Aggies would tie the game in the third on a sacrifice fly from Chuck Howard with one away scoring Zach Voight who led off the inning with a walk. Zac Fisher would single and Bryan Karraker would walk to load the bases but the Aggies would end the inning on a fly out to right field.

Dan Reid would record a 1-2-3 inning for the Aggies and in the bottom of the fourth the Aggies would put the first two batters on base and Zach Voight would deliver a single to left scoring Wes Starkes from second. Ryan Aguayo would fly out moving Snowley to third and after a Tanner Waite walk, Chuck Howard would reach on a fielding error by the third baseman allowing Snowley and Voight to score putting the Aggies up 8-5.

SJSU would cut the Aggies lead to 8-6 getting an RBI single from Kerry Jenkins but the Aggies would come to the plate in the bottom of the fifth and effectively put the game out of reach. Tyler Forney would start the inning off with a single and Wes Starkes would follow with a double to put runners at second and third with nobody out. Kurt Snowley would single to left scoring Forney, Zach Voight would single to right scoring Starkes, Ryan Aguayo would collect a hit singling to right scoring Snowley, Tanner Waite would single through the right side scoring Voight. Aguayo and Waite would advance a bas on a passed abll and Tyler Owens would hit a sacrifice fly to center scoring Aguayo. After a Bryan Karraker walk, Ty Forney would come to the plate for the second time in the inning and collect his second hit scoring Waite. Starkes would also come to the plate for the second time and deliver a double to center field scoring Karraker and Forney. The inning would end on a strikeout but the Aggies collected eight runs on eight hits and took a 16-6 lead into the sixth inning.

Neither team would score in the sixth and the Spartans would add a pair of runs in the top of the seventh to make the final score 16-8.

Dan Reid picked up the victory for the Aggies to improve to 6-1 as he went 5.0 innings allowing six runs on 10 hits with two strikeouts and two walks. The Aggies pounded out 19 hits while the Spartans had 10.

GAME TWO: SAN JOSE STATE 7, NM STATE 3
The Aggies fell behind early in game two as San Jose State put up three runs in the first and a run in the second as they would get a one out walk from Jacob Valdez followed by an RBI single from Danny Stienstra and an RBI double from Zach Jones. Tyler Christian would single in Jones with two out to give SJSU a 3-0 lead after one inning.

The Spartans' fourth run of the game would come on an RBI single from Valdez scoring Craig Hertler from second.

The Spartans would add runs in the fourth, fifth and seventh to take a 7-0 lead as the Aggie offense would struggle to gain traction against SJSU starter Esteban Guzman. The Aggies would go down in order in the first, third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings after stranding a pair of runners in the second.

The Aggies would put together rally in the bottom of the seventh as Zach Voight would lead off the inning with a walk. After Aguayo and Fisher were retired, Zac Fisher would single to put runners at the corners. Tyler Owens would double to left center scoring Voight and Fisher. Tanner Rust would pitch hit for Chace Perkins and Justin Cooper would pinch run for Owens and Tanner Rust would deliver an RBI single to score Cooper and cut the deficit to 7-3. After a Tyler Forney single, Wes Starkes would walk to load the bases. The Spartans would bring in closer Zach Jones to pitch and he would get Kurt Snowley to ground into a fielder's choice as the Spartans forced out Forney at third.

The Aggies would bring in pitcher Riley Bevill who would work scoreless eighth and ninth innings to keep the Aggies in the game but the offense would be unable to mount a comeback against Jones.

Tyler Mack took the loss for the Aggies giving up six runs on seven hits in 5.0 innings of work. Robert Roher allowed a run on three hits and Riley Bevill pitched the final two innings walking two but not allowing any hits or runs.
