LAS CRUCES, N.M. -New Mexico State soccer head coach Blair Quinn has promoted Cortney Sobrero to assistant coach. Sobrero spent the last two seasons with the Aggies as a graduate assistant.
“It was easily the best choice and the best thing to do for myself, for the program and for the team,” Quinn said. “She has been here for two years already and knows the girls very well, and they all like and respect her a lot, as do I.”
She will assist with facet of the NM State program, including daily operations, recruiting, travel accommodations, budget, academics and on-field direction.
“I’m very excited to stay with the girls and to continue what we started in 2009,” Sobrero said. “I’m so glad Blair is here. I think he’s a great fit for the program, and I’m excited for the 2011 season.”
Sobrero joined the Aggie soccer staff in August 2009. She helped the Aggies to a 9-9-1 record in their first season and a berth to the WAC Tournament in 2009. In the 2010 season, NM State smashed multiple school records and finished the year with a 7-8-3 record.
Sobrero was a standout forward at Fresno State from 2003-06 and a three-time first team All-WAC selection. In addition, she was a WAC All-Tournament Team honoree twice. Sobrero left her name in the Bulldog record books, and she holds the single-season shots on goal record with 32 in 2005. She ranks second in career shots (248) and third in hat tricks (2) while she is also in the top 10 for career points (60), career goals (25) and career assists (10). Professionally, Sobrero played for the Boston Breakers of the Women’s Professional Soccer in 2009 and Fylkir of the Icelandic Premier League in summer 2008.
After two years in Las Cruces, Sobrero graduates Saturday, May 7, with a master’s degree in criminal justice.
