The NCAA announced that Aggie senior Arthur Surreaux would represent the Western Athletic Conference in the singles portion of the 2011 NCAA Championships. We spoke with first year head coach Carlos Vargas to get his thoughts on the accomplishment, a first for the Aggie program

bleedCrimson.net: This is the first time that an Aggie has qualified for the singles portion of the NCAA Championships?
Carlos Vargas: It's the first time ever. We have made it into the team portion twice before but into the individuals, we never have. That's a big accomplishment for him and the university.

bc.net: Was this something that he had set out as a goal at the beginning of the season?
CV: As far as having envisioned it, I don't think so but what got it all started was he started playing pretty good in the fall and in practice and we went to the tournament at Baylor and he wasn't really playing his best right then but as he continued to advance through his matches he got a little better and then a little better and a little better and in that tournament you play so many matches that all of the sudden we found ourselves in the middle of the tennis and he was playing pretty good tennis.

He just got more and more excited as the tournament went and started playing better and better. He brought some matches back, I think there was one where he was a set down and 5-0 and came back from that and he won that match. When he won that match he felt like he could beat anybody.

He gave himself a chance and kept going. Every time we thought he was done at that tournament he would pull out another match and another win and before you knew it he had taken the trophy at Baylor. I think that's what got it all started and that's what set him up for the rest of the season.

It was good that he gets this opportunity and this chance in his senior year. I'm glad he was recognized for the good season he had and he's excited.

bc.net: You've been with the men's program for a while but this is your first year as the head coach, what does it mean for you to have a player qualify for the NCAA Championships in your first year?
CV: Obviously this is a great achievement for the program. For it to happen in my first year, it's obviously exciting. It's exciting for me and I'm just as excited as Arthur is. It's all new to me. It's good to know that we are capable of doing that here at NMSU and that it doesn't have to be just the big name universities out there and it's encouraging. I think it will help the program in future seasons for recruiting and for the morale of the team just to know that yes, we can do it as well as anybody else.
