LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The New Mexico State baseball team ( 32-15, 7-8 WAC) split a doubleheader with Sacramento State (16-33, 3-12 WAC) losing game one15-8 and coming back to win game two 11-9 at Presley Askew Field, Saturday, May 7.
The Aggies posted 14 hits in game one but it wasn't enough as Sacramento State tallied 17 hits to win the game. NM State out-hit the Hornets in game two 18-14 but nine walks by the Sac. State pitching staff and 10 RBI by the Aggie hitters proved to be the difference of the game.
Sophomore left-hander Ryan Beck picked up win No. 9 of the year and needs just one more win to tie for the top spot for wins in a season at NM State. Junior closer Scott Coffman picked up save No. 9 and is now tied for No. 1 in saves in a season at NM State. He needs four more saves to move into first on the all-time saves list.
GAME ONE RECAP
The Aggies dropped game one of the doubleheader 15-8 as Sacramento State tallied 17 hits and the NM State marked 14. NM State starting pitcher Justin Cooper was credited with the loss after going 4.1 innings, striking out three batters and giving up six earned runs. Hornets' pitcher Brandon Sandoval worked 5.2 innings to earn the save as he also gave up six runs.
Sophomore second baseman did all he could to help the Aggies as he was a perfect 5-for-5 at the plate with a run and an RBI. Ryan Clark, who entered the game as a pinch-hitter, tallied a 2-for-2 day with a run scored.
The Hornets were the first to score posting a run in the first, which was answered by NM State in the bottom of the inning. Sacramento State posted two more runs in the third inning to take a 3-1 lead. After another Hornet runner crossed the plate in the fourth, Sacramento State pulled away scoring four times in the fifth. The Aggies squeezed the Hornet lead to 8-3 posting two runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Both teams matched each other on the scoreboard in the sixth inning with three runs each to take the score to 11-6. Sacramento State tallied four more runs in the seventh, which included a three RBI double by a Hornet hitter.
The Aggies went to the plate one more time and posted two runs to finish on the losing side of the board with the score 15-8.
GAME TWO RECAP
The Aggies came from behind in game two to take a split on the day as starter Ryan Beck 6.2 innings to pick up the win. He struck out seven Hornets and gave up four walks before Scott Coffman came in to work 2.1 innings without giving up a run.
Sacramento State took a 3-0 lead after an inning and a half of play but the Aggies marked two in the bottom of the second on a Bryan Karraker home run to pull within one.
Both teams scored four runs in the fourth inning to make the score 7-6 before the Aggies took advantage of a Sac State reliever posting three runs in the bottom of the fifth. With sophomore Zac Fisher on third base, the Hornets' pitcher threw a wild pitch allowing Fisher to cross the plate and tie the game. Senior centerfielder Wes Starkes hit an RBI single through the left side to give the Aggies a 8-7 lead before senior Ryan Aguayo walked with the bases loaded pushing the lead to 9-7.
Fisher blasted a solo home run in the sixth and NM State scored one more time in the bottom of the seventh on a Parker Hipp single through the right side to secure the victory.
The Aggies wrap up the series with Sac State, Sunday, May 8 at 11:00 a.m. (MT). The game is scheduled to air on the radio at KSNM AM 570 with Jeff Matthews giving the play-by-play action.
