Aggies Sweep Miners, Take Season Series

EL PASO, TX - The 13th ranked Aggie volleyball team played a late season out of conference match on Tuesday night against I-10 rival UTEP. The Aggies swept the Miners in three games 30-28, 30-21, 30-21.

The Aggies started the game strong taking an early 3-0 lead and extended the lead to 10-6. UTEP would rally to tie the game at 11 and the teams would trade points to 20 before UTEP went on a four point run to take a 24-20. UTEP maintained their four point edge leading the match 26-22.

UTEP would take a 28-26 lead and looked to close out the game needing only two points, however the Aggies responded with a kill from Lindsey Yon to pull within one point at 28-27. Back to back attack errors by UTEP's Amy Sanders and Patty Jarmoc gave the Aggies the lead at 29-28 and Lindsey Yon finished off the comeback with a kill. Aggies won game one by a score of 30-28.

The Aggie started game two the same way they started game one by going up 3-0. However this game the Miners would stick close through the first half of the match never falling behind by more than two points with the Aggies taking a 15-13 advantage. A kill by Kim Oguh would give the Aggies a three point lead at 17-14. The Aggies would go on a 6-2 point run to extend their lead to 23-16. The Aggies would continue to hold a sizeable lead with the Miners never getting closer than six points at 26-20. The Aggies would win four of the final five points of the match closing out UTEP by a final score of 30-21.

In game three it was the Miners who would jump out to the early lead at 3-1 however their lead would be short lived as the Aggies scored the next three points on a kill by Amber Simpson, a service ace by Krystal Torres and a kill by Kim Oguh. The two teams battled back and forth with the Aggies holding a slim 19-18 lead. Leading by one point, the Aggies would go on an 8 point run to take a commanding 27-19 lead. The Aggies would go on to finish off the game and the match taking game three 30-21.

Aggie senior middle hitter Kim Oguh, an Hanks HS (El Paso, TX) graduate playing in her final match against UTEP had an outstanding night hitting .722 getting 13 kills on 18 attack attempts against no attack errors. Freshman Whitney Phillips saw significant playing time playing in all three games hit .294 with 11 kills on 34 attempts with only one attack error. Middle hitter Amber Simpson finished with 10 kills on 20 attempts and two attack errors for a hitting percentage of .400. Texas A&M transfer Lindsey Yon also tallied 10 kills on 29 atttempts but had six attack errors and finished the night with a .138 hitting percentage.

Defensively, Krystal Torres led the Aggies with 15 digs. Lindsey Yon had 11 digs. Franklin HS (El Paso, TX) and senior defensive specialist Jordan Bostic had four digs in her final match against UTEP.

The Miners were led offensively by sophomore Catherine Chavez who had 11 kills hitting .333 on the night. Sophomore outside hitter Amy Sanders also had 11 kills but finished with 10 attack errors for a .026 hitting percentage.

Defensively for UTEP, Elsa Reyes had 13 digs while Catherine Chavez and Amy Sanders pitched in with 11 digs apiece.

With the win the Aggies improve to 20-4 on the season. Next up for the team is a trip to last place Boise State who are 1-13 in the WAC and 4-19 overall. The Aggies then finish up their trip through the state of Idaho with a trip to Moscow to take on the Idaho Vandals who are currently in 6th place in the WAC at 5-6 and 9-13 overall.
