When I walked into practice on Monday afternoon, I was feeling pretty great about our team. We were 14-0, with a perfect pre-conference record. It doesn't get much better than that, I was thinking to myself.
Little did I know it was about to get a lot better!
Media cameras were all around, but I didn't think much of it. It's football's bye-week, so I thought we may get some extra coverage. When Coach gathered us all together and told us we had finally cracked the Top 25, it was so exciting! It's a big deal for our program to finally get some national attention.
Last week, we went to South Dakota for a tournament. I think it was probably the first time in South Dakota for all of us. The tournament went really well.
The odd moment of the weekend was definitely when our match got suspended under a tornado watch. The town tornado sirens blaring, our score tied at 27-27 in the first game, everyone was ushered into a big locker room. There we waited: both teams, coaches, trainers, media and fans. Apparently, that day, 9 tornadoes touched down in South Dakota. Ironically, earlier that week in Las Cruces, we had been forced to evacuate our gym during practice for another tornado warning. We were yelling at the top of our lungs in the gym, trying to communicate during drills, but with the crazy hail storm barraging the tin roof, it was impossible to hear. Two tornado evacuations in one week? That definitely doesn't happen very often!
Our season is really divided into two parts: pre-Conference and Conference. Pre-Conference is over (14-0, not too shabby!, and now, it's time for the matches that can make or break our season. Don't get me wrong, it's wonderful to be ranked in the Top 25, but like Coach Jordan has been telling us all week, that doesn't help us win games. Everyone is 0-0 in WAC play, and now we have a huge red bullseye on our backs.
Luckily, our team is used to being the one everyone is gunning for. We're not overconfident because we know that anyone in our conference could beat anyone else on any given night. Every team in the league is better than they were last year, and the next few weeks are going to be full of tough matches. Wish us luck and please, come out and fill Las Cruces High. We need all the fan support we can get! GO AGGIES! #24!!
