Aggies Sweep Grambling To Open Hotel Encanto Tournament

The New Mexico State volleyball team got a balanced offensive performance en route to a sweep of visiting Grambling State on Friday morning in the first match of the Hotel Encanto Classic. The Aggies defeated the Tigers 25-14 in set one and 25-16 in sets two and three. The Aggies had four players with at least seven kills apiece led by middle attacker Kelsey Brennan with nine kills while hitting .500 with just two attack errors.

The Aggies jumped out to an early 6-2 lead in the first set and quickly extended their lead to nine points with a 7-2 run that put them ahead 13-4. The Tigers would claw back into the set going on a 5-0 run to cut the Aggies' lead to four at 13-9 but New Mexico State would put together a 9-3 run to go ahead 22-12 before winning the set 25-14.

In set two Grambling kept things close early on as they trailed by just one at 9-8 after an attack error by the Aggies' Meredith Hays, however, New Mexico State would open things up going on a 6-0 run to take a 15-8 lead. The Aggies would extend the lead further going on a 6-3 run to push the margin to 10 points at 21-11 and would win the set 25-16 with the final point coming on a service error by the Tigers.

The third set saw the Aggies jump out to a 10-4 lead and they would maintain their six point cushion leading 14-8. The Aggies would go on an 8-2 run to push their lead to 10 points at 22-12 and would go on to win the set 25-16.

The Aggies hit .314 on the match led by Kelsey Brennan's nine kills and a match-high .500 hitting percentage. Freshman Jocelyn Leichner hit .455 recording seven kills while sophomore Desiree Scott also added seven kills hitting .429. Meredith Hays added seven kills and a team-high six digs and Stephanie Ziegler added six kills and hit .357 for the match.

The Aggie defense held Grambling to just a .029 attack percentage. The Tigers' Tiara McIver finished with a team-high six kills with a .190 hitting percentage.

With the win the Aggies improve to 3-1 on the season and will host Arkansas-Little Rock at 7:00 p.m. on Friday night as they continue play in the 2011 Hotel Encanto Classic.
