JACKSONVILLE, AL - The New Mexico State soccer team opened the Adidas/Gamecock Soccer Classic with a 2-1 win over tournament host Jacksonville State.
NM State improved to 3-2-0 on the season, while the Gamecocks fell to 0-5-0. This was the first road win of the season for the Aggies.
After a scoreless first half, the Aggies attacked quickly in the second period, when freshman forward Katie Smith scored 22 seconds into the half. The score was her second of the season.
Jacksonville State answered to tie the match at 1-1 less than a minute later. The Aggies reclaimed the lead in the 55th minute on junior forward Yolanda McMillion's first goal of the season and No. 11 of her career. She scored the game-winning goal, when freshman forward Jennae Cambra found her on a cross from the left side. The assist was Cambra's career first.
Sophomore goalkeeper Erin Wosick recorded five saves and earned her third win of the season. The Aggie offense out-shot the Gamecocks, 18-10.
NM State concludes the tournament Sunday, Sept. 4 at 11 a.m. against Tennessee Tech.
