Aggie Men's Golf Finishes Fifth At Colorado Invitational

ERIE, CO - The New Mexico State men’s golf team wrapped up its first competition of the 2011-12 season with a fifth-place team finish of 3-over par, 867 at the Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational held at the Colorado National Golf Club, a championship layout of 7,741 yard, par-72. The Aggies carded a team score of 1-over par, 289 in the final round.

Junior Justin Shin led the Aggies from start to finish in the tournament, finishing fourth overall with a three-round score of 8-under par, 208. Shin carded a final round score of 1-under par, 71. Senior Zachery Fullerton tied for seventh overall with a three-round score of 5-under par, 211. His final round score of 3-under par, 69 was the low on the day for any Aggie golfer.

Senior Gaston De La Torre fell back a little in the final round with a 3-over par, 75, placing him in a tied for 24th overall with a three-round score of 2-over par, 218. Freshman Simon Miller had his best round of the tournament with a 2-over par, 74. He finished tied for 73rd overall at 15-over par, 231.

Redshirt junior Miko Alejandro rounded out the Aggie competitors with a final round score of 5-over par, 77, also his best round of the tournament. Alejandro finished 80th overall with a three-round score of 19-over par, 235.

Colorado took the team title with a score of 24-under par, followed by New Mexico (-19), Oklahoma (-8), San Diego (-7) and NM State (+3). Beau Schoolcraft of Colorado and Alex Ching of San Diego both finished at 11-under par with Schoolcraft winning the playoff for the individual title.

The Aggies will be back on the course for the Golfweek Conference Challenge in Burlington, Iowa on Sept, 25-27.
