BURLINGTON, IA - The New Mexico State men’s golf team wrapped up competition at the 2011 Golfweek Conference Challenge at the 7,360-yard, par 72 Spirit Hollow Golf Course in Burlington, Iowa. NM State carded its best round of the tournament with a team score of 5-over par, 293, placing ninth out of 15 teams at 26-over par.
Junior Justin Shin had a monster day on the links with a 4-under par, 68, finishing third overall as an individual with a three-round score of 4-under par, 212. Shin recorded four birdies and an eagle in the final round with just two bogeys.
Senior Gaston De La Torre shot his third straight round of even par golf with a 72 in round three. De La Torre finished the tournament tied for eighth overall with a three-round score of 216. He tallied four birdies in the final round.
Freshman Cosme Beamonte had his best round of the tournament with a 3-over par, 75 in round three. Beamonte tied for 61st overall with a three-round score of 16-over par, 232. He recorded two birdies on the day. Senior Zachery Fullerton finished 60th overall with a three-round score of 15-over par, 231. In his final round, Fullerton shot a 6-over par, 78 with three birdies.
Junior Derek Baade struggled in the final round with a 9-over par, 81. Baade finished 26-over par, 242 and tied for 73rd overall.
Arkansas took the team title with a 5-under par, followed by Chattanooga (+2), Oklahoma State (+3), New Mexico (+11) and California (+14). Chattanooga’s Stephan Jaeger earned the individual title with a three-round score of 7-under par.
The Aggies will be back in action at the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate Sept. 30-Oct. 1 in Albuquerque, N.M.
