Aggie Cross Country Records Pair Of Top 10 Finishes At Cowboy Jamboree

STILLWATER, OK - The New Mexico State University cross country team made its presence known at the Oklahoma State Cowboy Jamboree on Saturday, Oct. 1, with both teams finishing in the top 10 overall.

The women's team finished seventh overall after lining up against some of the best athletes in the nation. Junior Courtney Schultz finished sixth overall with a time of 17:28.02 for the top time for NM State. Schultz's finish was a vast improvement from her 30th overall finish from 2009 when she was a freshman.

"Courtney did a really great job today," assistant coach Meaghan Harkins said. "She finished with some of the best athletes in the country today."

Junior Camille Schultz also finished with a great time, finishing 12th overall and second for NM State with a time of 17:43.44. Schultz also improved from her time in 2009 when she finished 31st overall.

Junior Chelsa McDonnell finished 45th overall and third for NM State with a time of 18:36.04. Sophomore Samantha Hamilton finished 59th overall and fourth for NM State with a time of 18:53.92. Freshman Tamara Lementino rounded out the top five for NM State by finishing just behind Hamilton with a time of 18:54.01, good for 60th overall.

"The women's team had a really solid day," Harkins said. "They came out and did what we needed to in terms of overall performance."

The men's team finished 10th overall out of 28 teams that competed in the event. The men's team competed against some of the best teams in the country, with five of the teams sitting in the top 25.

Junior Jonah Ruybalid finished first for the Aggies and 43rd overall with a time of 25:06.31. Ian Ruybalid finished close behind in second place for NM State and 56th overall with a time of 25:17.65. Senior Kevin Taft finished third for NM State and 58th overall with a time of 25:23.42.

"It was an off day for the men's team," Harkins said. "We can come back home and fix a few things for what it really matters in a month from now."

The cross country team will return to Las Cruces before heading to Goodyear, Ariz., for the Grand Canyon Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 8.
