Aggies Fall 45-34 At Hawai'i

HONOLULU, HI - The New Mexico State football team dropped its second game of the conference season at Hawai'I 45-34 at Aloha Stadium Saturday night.

The Aggies drop to 3-4 overall and 1-2 in the conference. Hawai'i improved to 4-3 overall and 2-1 in the WAC with the win.

The Aggies were led by junior running back Kenny Turner with 119 yards on the ground on 17 carries including a 46-yard touchdown run. It marked the fourth straight game that Turner eclipsed 100 rushing yards this season. Turner also led the Aggies in catches with seven for 61 yards.

Senior quarterback Matt Christian played most of the second half after suffering an injury late in the first half. Christian finished 18-of-34 with 224 yards and two scores. He also ran one in for a score. Senior Taveon Rogers hauled in both Christian touchdown passes in the game as part of 64 yards on three receptions on the day. The senior also broke the all-time NM State record for career kickoff returns in the game that currently stands 74. Freshman Austin Franklin also caught a touchdown on from senior wideout Todd Lee on a trick play in the first half to account for the other score.

Sophomore defensive back Darien Johnson led the Aggies on defense with a career high 10 tackles including one for a 5-yard loss. Senior safety Donyae Coleman added eight stops. NM State sacked the UH quarterback five times and recovered a fumble in the game.

The Warriors started the second half with the ball but the Aggie defense forced a punt. Freshman quarterback Travaughn Colwell came in for the injured Matt Christian who was hurt in the Aggies final drive of the first half. Colwell could not get the Aggies going and NM State was forced to punt the ball away with 9:18 left in the third quarter.

Hawai'i scored with 3:10 left in the third quarter on an 18-yard touchdown run to extend its lead to 33-14 after another missed extra point attempt.

The Aggies took the ball right down the field and scored on two plays, capped off by a 46-yard touchdown run by Turner. Turner eclipsed the 100-yard rushing mark for the fourth straight game. NM State was down 33-20 with 2:33 left in the third quarter.

The Aggies got the ball back at the beginning of the fourth quarter but couldn't move it down the field and had to punt. The Warriors scored on a 1-yard run to bring the score to 39-20 with 11:32 remaining in the game.

Christian answered with a 4-yard touchdown run to pull NM State to within 13 points at 39-26 with 9:10 to go in the game. The Aggies tried a 2-point conversion but failed.

The Warriors scored again to make it 45-26 with just over six minutes to play. The Aggies didn't quit driving down the field as Christian hit Rogers for a 9-yard touchdown and later Lee for the two-point conversion to make it 45-34.

The Aggies would try an on-side kick but Hawai'i recovered the ball. Hawai'i then ran out the clock and the game ended with a 45-34 Warrior victory over the Aggies.

NM State had to punt on its first two possessions, while forcing Hawai'i to punt on its first possession. The Warrior then struck first with a 24-yard touchdown pass with 4:30 left in the first quarter to take a 7-0 lead. Hawai'i went 67 yards in eight plays, taking up 4:37 on the clock.

The Aggies were forced to punt on their next possession but the Warriors blocked the punt, scooping the ball up and taking it in for a touchdown. Hawaii led 14-0 with 1:55 to go in the first quarter.

The Aggies then took the ball right down the field and scored on a pass by wide receiver Todd Lee to Austin Franklin, a 47-yard touchdown pass. The Aggies now trailed 14-7 with 36 second left in the first. It was Lee's first career touchdown pass of his career. NM State's drive was four plays, 79 yards in 36 seconds.

The Warriors would miss a 41-yard field goal to give NM State the ball back with 11:15 left in the half. NM State quickly moved the ball into Hawai'i territory but couldn't convert on a fourth and four, turning the ball over on downs to the Warriors with 7:37 left in the half.

Both the Warriors and Aggies were forced to punt in their next possessions, as Hawai'i took over with 5:26 remaining in the half. Hawai'i then scored just six plays later to extend its lead to 21-7 with 2:55 to go in the half.

NM State answered with a quick strike, a 41-yard touchdown pass from Christian to Rogers. The Aggies scored on six plays, covering 64 yards in 1:08. NM State trailed 21-14 with 1:29 left in the half. The Warriors drove straight down the field and scored on a quarterback draw for 17 yards, moving the score to 27-14 after a missed extra point.

The Aggies took over with 33 seconds left in the half. Christian then scrambled up the field but was hit hard and fumbled the ball back to the Warriors. Hawai'i took three shots down field but was unable to score as the Aggies went into the locker room down 27-14 at the half.

Christian led the Aggies with 122 yards on 11-of-20 with one touchdown. Turner rushed for 45 yards on 12 carries and also led the Aggies in receptions with five. Taveon Rogers caught two passes for 55 yards and touchdown. David Mahoney led the Aggie defense with five tackles.

The Aggies will now host Nevada on Homecoming, October 29th at 6:07 p.m. in Aggie Memorial Stadium.
