bleedCrimson.net Weekly Coach Walker Interview :: 11/08/11

bleedCrimson.net: Your thoughts on the Georgia game?
DeWayne Walker: It was a humbling experience. We hadn't experience being non-competitive all year so after the first quarter it got pretty bad for us. We're just trying to flush it and move on and get ready for Fresno State.

bc.net: There were couple of bright spots in the Georgia game, specifically Kenny Turner's performance rushing for nearly 100 yards and a touchdown and also over 100 yards receiving and a touchdown against one of the nation's top defense.
DW: Yeah it was good to see him bounce back. I know he wasn't real happy with his game against Nevada and I know he wanted to redeem himself. It was good to see him bounce back and hopefully he can continue that throughout the rest of the season.

bc.net: One of the other bright spots was the play of the offensive line. Georgia's defense had come into the game with 44 tackles for loss in the five previous games, all against SEC competition, and they had just two against the Aggies.
DW: You know I thought they did a good defending themselves. They were equally impressive with their pass protection which to me showed up a little bit more. I thought they did a good job. We just need these guys to continue to improve and get some wins in these last four games.

bc.net: Obviously we talked about the competitiveness throughout all the games this season. After the second quarter went south on you guys, what did you talk about with your team at halftime?
DW: I kinda got after them a little bit. I told them that wasn't Aggie football and I was disappointed. I'm not going to sit up here and say that we had a chance to win the football game at that point. I just told them that I wanted them to go out in the second half and play Aggie football and compete and they did. I know they [Georgia] had subs in the game at certain spots but they still went out there and they still competed and made it respectable from our standpoint.

bc.net: This weekend you take on Fresno State. They're a good team but also one that, despite the winless record against them, have played some pretty close games with them.
DW: They're a good football team. I know they've struggled a little bit and I know that Pat Hill is trying to regroup his team but they're a good football team. From a win-loss standpoint we haven't had a lot of success against them so we're going to have our hands full once again.

bc.net: They have up some big touchdown plays against Louisiana Tech through the air and one big touchdown run. What do you think you might be able to do to exploit their defense?
DW: They're struggling a little bit and we're going to have to try to find ways to score some points. If you look at it from a statistical standpoint this could be a high scoring game because they're explosive offensively too. We need our defense and our special teams to step up in this game and we need our offense to score some points.

bc.net: What have you see from them on film from Fresno State offensively this year with a new quarterback?
DW: They've changed a little bit. They were somewhat of a run first, now it looks like they're trying to throw the ball around a little bit more. They have a really good receiving crew and so they want to try to get the ball in those guys' hands. At the same time I don't think this running back needs a lot of carries. Every time he touches the ball he's capable of taking it to the house. It's a scary offense and we're going to have to definitely play one of our better games on defense to try to keep our football team in the ballgame.

bc.net: When you look at remainder of the season, you're 3-6 with four games left. We haven't talked about it at all throughout the season or even before the beginning of the season but your team is still mathematically in position to become bowl eligible if you were to win out. I know you're taking things game by game but is that something that you'll talk to your kids about?
DW: No, not necessarily. It may be something that I bring up to them today. I've been a little hesitant to bring that up. We want to take one game at a time. Obviously you win one, you win two, you win three then you position yourself to maybe have an opportunity to accomplish something pretty special. We just need to focus on one game at a time and I tell you what, this would be a great win for this football program.

bc.net: How is the health of the team coming out of the Georgia game?
DW: Not bad. Andrew Kersten, we'll find out where he is. Donyae Coleman got dinged up a little bit but for the most part we actually came out of this one pretty good.
