Aggies' Rally Comes Up Short In 76-72 Overtime Loss To UTEP

Hannah WomackThe New Mexico State women's basketball team lost a heartbreaker in overtime to I-10 rival UTEP on Wednesday night falling 76-72. Trailing by 61-56 with 32 seconds left, the Aggies would cut the Miners' lead to just two points as Jasmine Rutledge would hit a jumper and get fouled by UTEP's Kristine Vitola. Rutledge would hit the free throw making the score 61-59. UTEP would inbound the ball but Tabytha Wampler would commit her fifth foul of the game putting Melisa Mendes on the line for UTEP. Mendes would miss the front end of a one-and-one and Kaitlyn Soto would grab the rebound and drive the length of the court for the game-tying layup with just one second left on the clock to send the game to overtime.

The Aggies would take a two point lead in overtime but UTEP would go on a 9-0 run to take a 70-63 lead with 3:03 left in overtime. The Aggies would get back-to-back threes from Erica Sanchez while UTEP would get a jumper from Mendes leaving the Aggies down 72-69 with 1:32 left to play in the extra period. UTEP would take a five point lead on a layup by Kristine Vitola but Jasmine Rutledge would convert a three point play to cut the lead down to two. UTEP would convert a pair of free throws with six seconds left to take a 76-72 lead and Kaitlyn Soto would miss a layup as time expired as UTEP would hold on for the victory.

The Aggies jumped out to an early 7-3 lead as they shook off their sluggish offensive performance on Monday night against Idaho State. The Aggies would go up 17-10 after a three point play from Tabytha Wampler with 12:51 left in the first half and would lead 19-10 after a pair of free throws from Kelsie Rozendaal, however, UTEP would respond with a 7-0 run to cut the Aggies' lead to just two at 19-17. The Aggies would respond with a 7-0 run to push their lead back to nine points with 5:26 remaining in the first half. UTEP would trim th margin to just four with 1:36 left after a pair of free throws by Kayla Thornton but Kelsie Rozendaal would hit a jumper with 21 seconds left to give the Aggies a 31-25 lead which they would take into the break.

The Aggies led by seven, 40-33 with 16:19 left in the second half but UTEP would go on a 7-0 run to tie the game. The Aggies would stretch their back to six points at 49-43 with 9:27 left to play but UTEP would outscore the Aggies 17-3 over the next seven and a half minutes to take a 60-52 lead. The Aggies would chip away at the lead over the final two minutes eventually sending the game to overtime before falling in overtime.

Freshman Hannah Womack set a career high with 23 points shooting 60 percent from the field including 4-of-7 from three point distance. Jasmine Rutledge added 14 points and grabbed six rebounds and Erica Sanchez scored 10 points. Tabytha Wampler saw her double-double streak come to an end as she finished with seven points and nine boards before fouling out. The Miners were led by Gloria Brown's 21 points on 9-of-11 shooting. Chrishauna Parker added 11 points for the Miners who shot 45.5 percent from the floor for the game to the Aggies' 38.2 percent.

The Aggies fall to 1-2 on the season with the loss while UTEP improves to 2-0. The Aggies are back in action on Monday, November 21st as they host Arizona.
