LAS CRUCES, N.M. - New Mexico State men's basketball head coach Marvin Menzies has finalized his staff with the hiring of Paul Weir as director of operations, Wednesday, Nov. 7.

Weir is responsible for managing the program's daily operations, working with the Sixth Man Club, assisting in recruiting, organizing team travel and promoting community outreach.

"Paul comes to us from the Iowa staff that was very well organized and had a lot of basketball knowledge from the school of Bobby Knight," Menzies said. "Paul was able to ascertain a lot of that information. So he'll be a huge benefit, especially in our two match-ups against New Mexico, because of his familiarity with Steve Alford. He is a very energetic, enthusiastic individual that I think will have great chemistry with our kids and will be a tremendous asset to the program."

"I am truly excited about the opportunity to work for coach Menzies," Weir said. "To be a part of such an excellent program is an honor, and I hope to help in any way I can to continue the winning tradition here at NMSU."

Last season, Weir worked as director of operations at Iowa after spending a year as the Hawkeyes administrative assistant. In 2006, Iowa won its second Big Ten Conference Tournament title and 25 games, the second highest total in school history. With the Hawkeyes, Weir also worked with Adam Haluska, a rookie with the New Orleans Hornets.

During the 2004-05 season, Weir worked with the Northwestern State (La.) program. The Demons were 21-12 and claimed the Southland Conference regular season title.

Prior to working at the collegiate level, Weir was as the head coach at Don Bosco Catholic High School in Toronto from 1999-2003. En route to a 41-32 record, he graduated all senior members of his program in his tenure. In 2002-03, Weir's team ranked ninth in the greater Toronto area.

Weir graduated with honors from York University, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, in 2004. As a freshman, he was the starting point guard for coach Bob Bain. Weir earned a master's degree from Northwestern State in health and human performance in 2005.

A Toronto native, Weir was a regional and city all-star point guard at Iona Catholic Secondary School.
