bleedCrimson.net Weekly Coach Jordan Interview :: Semifinal Recap/Championship Preview

bleedCrimson.net: You got three very good performances from Kelsey Brennan, Meredith Hays and Stephanie Ziegler in the win over Idaho last night.
Mike Jordan: We passed the ball really well and we were able to stay in system offensively so we hit for a good percentage against a very good defensive Idaho team, that was great to see. Defensively we didn't block well but we dug the ball pretty well. Everyone was engaged defensively, playing hard and made a lot of really really good digs in key moments and I think that was the difference.

bc.net: You take on Hawai'i tonight in the championship match. You've played them twice now. What do you take away from both of those matches and what do you need to do well tonight?
MJ: Obviously they're the most athletic team in the conference by far. They've got more skill players than everybody else and to beat them you have to make sure you win the serve and pass game. It was fairly even in Las Cruces but they won that part of the game big-time in Hawai'i. We passed terrible and we're going to have to settle that down against their jump servers. They do the jump serving stuff very well and obviously they've got Kanani. Kanani has a different ceiling than everybody else. Our elevator goes to the 10th floor and she's got an elevator that goes to the 15th. She's impressive and really takes over matches against us quite often. I know Hawai'i will rise to the occasion against us, they always do.

bc.net: You talked about the jump serving, how do the girls handle that?
MJ: We've got to try to simulate it a little bit. We don't have anybody that can simulate what [Jane] Croson does at the service line. She hits it at a different level as well. You just have to relax a little bit, make sure you're ready to communicate and trust your technique. I think there are times when we've handled that jump serving really well and then there have been times, like in Hawai'i, where we've been really bad at it. Hopefully we'll just relax and play. Fresno came out last night and said, "What the heck, let's play hard" and they didn't tighten up until they got the two sets to none lead. My hope is that we'll come out with that same type of attitude, let's play hard and not worry about things that we can't control too much.

bc.net: Having faced Hawai'i twice and their jump serving, does that help settle your kids down?
MJ: Maybe, I'm not sure after the last performance against it, she aced us like six times. We may be a little more nervous. I'm not sure, we'll find out at six o'clock tonight when she throws up the first one.

bc.net: Obviously the three kids last night that had big matches last night will need to do so again but who is somebody else that really needs to have a standout match tonight for you guys to win?
MJ: I'm hoping our quick hitters, Desiree and Michelle, will produce offensively. I think we've got to go them a little more often, just pick and choose in transition when we get the ball to them. If we do that we have just a little more balance and I think we can win. We've got to have better balance against Hawai'i. We can beat everybody else in our conference with the set distribution that we have now but it's going to have to change a little bit to beat Hawai'i.
