The Bowling Green Daily News has reported that former Western Kentucky head coach and current Franklin-Simpson High School defensive coordinator David Elson has been hired as New Mexico State University's next defensive coordinator. According to the story Elson helped lead the FSHS football team to a class 4-A state title and was hired last week by New Mexico State and has been on the recruiting trail.

Elson coached Western Kentucky football program for seven seasons, finishing 39-42. He led WKU to NCAA FCS (Division I-AA) playoff appearances in 2003 and 2004 but was fired in the midst of the 2009 season. WKU eventually finished the season 0-12.

Elson takes over for departed defensive coordinator Dale Lindsey. The Aggies finished the season with a 4-9 record and 2-5 in WAC play but ranked 112th in points allowed per game allowing 37.8 per contest.
