The Aggie basketball team did very well for themselves yesterday in drawing Drake for the ESPNU BracketBusters matchup. The Bulldogs were about as good as the Aggies could have asked for in terms of a decent matchup (just ask George Mason how they feel about playing Lamar). On top of that, they drew an ESPNU televised game as well and it's early afternoon game which means fans can hopefully get back home and watch the two marquee match ups of St. Mary's at Murray State and Long Beach State at Creighton, both of which should be as good as any games you'll watch this season.
Both the Aggies and Bulldogs have five games to play before the BracketBusters matchup and it's entirely possible that the two teams could have 17 or 18 wins by the time they meet. One interesting note from yesterday's announcement on ESPNU was that the mothership listed the Aggies as one of the three teams with the most to lose from these games. We're not exactly sure why because the Aggies aren't going to be affected in terms of their NCAA hopes or potential seed line with a win or a loss in this game. Simply put, the Aggies must win the WAC tournament to get into the NCAA tournament, there will be no at-large bid for this team, not with an RPI hovering around 90 and certainly not without an outright regular season title.
That being said, this should be a great game. Aggie fans (ourselves included) have been clamoring for the Aggies to play against a Missouri Valley Conference team for a while now and we finally have our wish.
National signing day is tomorrow and the Aggie football team definitely has some holes to fill. We were asked by Teddy Feinberg from the Sun-News what would we like to see from this signing class? After thinking about it, this is what we'd like to see:
The Aggies need help on both the offensive and defensive lines. The Aggies lost several good players on both sides due to graduation. We would love to see them get a good "speed" pass rusher on the end (we're sure DeWayne would love to have one or two). We also think they need some help at outside LB, The Aggies seem to get burned on runs to the outside a lot more than they get burned on runs to the inside and we think getting a couple good OLBs would help.
We also think they also need to get a couple really good JUCO corners. We're not completely sold on having Jeremy Harris and Darien Johnson the top two cover corners. Johnson is a good young talent who has gotten a lot of playing time during his first two seasons as an Aggie but is a bit undersized at 5'9". Harris struggled mightily at the end of the season when he was matched up one-one-one.
Offensively, the Aggies need to get a big bruising running back (or Victor Johnson needs to have a breakout season which is entirely possible), Coach Walker noted in our postseason interview that he wanted to be able to run the ball downhill on short yardage situations, something they struggled with. We also think they also need to get a running back in the same mold as Kenny Turner (we all saw what wonders he did for the offense when he moved back to the running back spot, though landing one is easier said than done). The Aggies also need to get one or two WRs and they definitely have got to get a new punter and place kicker. The Aggies lost the field position battle way too many times last year with poor punts and/or the inability or unwillingness to kick a long field goal due to the inconsistency in the kicking game. The Aggie special teams cost the team a bunch of points during the season and that's one area that the Aggies definitely can't afford to give up ground.
