Aggie Women Fall 64-50 At Louisiana Tech

RUSTON, LA - The New Mexico State women’s basketball team fell to Louisiana Tech Saturday evening in Ruston, La., 64-50. The Aggies are now 6-21 overall and 3-9 in the WAC, as Louisiana Tech improves to 15-12 overall and 8-4 in conference play.

The Aggies shot 36.5 percent from the floor in the game, going 19-of-52, while out rebounding Louisiana Tech 34-33. NM State also shot well from the charity stripe hitting 9-of-11 and forced 18 Louisiana Tech turnovers.

Tabytha Wampler led all Aggies with 14 points, going 6-of-14 from the floor and 2-of-2 from the free throw line. Dre Chenier added 11 points as she was a perfect 6-of-6 from the line. Camila Rosen was the Aggies’ leading rebounder with seven boards.

The Aggies kept it close in the first half as the score was tied 4-4 at the 15:43 mark. Neither team seemed to be able to make a basket early on in the game. Louisiana Tech then went on an 8-0 run to push its lead to 12-4 with 10:23 left in the first half. The Aggies won’t record another point in the half until Chenier hit two free throws to cut the lead to 12-6 with 8:29 to go in the half.

The two teams traded baskets over the next four minutes as Louisiana Tech held on to a 17-12 lead with just over four minutes to go in the half. The Lady Techers would add one more bucket at the 2:56 mark to make it 19-12 but neither team could make another shot the rest of the half as the score remained the same at 19-12 at the half.

The Aggies stayed close with the Lady Techers to start the second half trailing 29-20 after the first media timeout of the half. LA Tech continued to extend its lead over the next eight minutes of play lead 49-27 with 8:39 to go in the game. The Lady Techers would put together a 22-7 run during that span to open up the game.

Despite being down over 20 points the Aggies chipped away at the 20-plus advantage and cut the LA Tech lead to 56-46 with 3:12 remaining in the game. But LA Tech was just too much for the Aggies, going on a 10-4 run to end the game, as Louisiana Tech defeated NM State, 64-50.

The Aggies will be back in action on March 1 in Reno, Nev., as they face Nevada at 1:00 p.m. (MT)
