The Daily Aggie :: 03/02/12 :: Aggie Men's Basketball Seeding Scenarios

With Nevada's win on Thursday night the Wolf Pack have wrapped up the number one seed in the WAC tournament. What remains for the Aggies is either a 2-seed or a 3-seed depending on how they finish the final game of the regular season. With a one-game lead over Idaho in the standings the Aggies must either win at Fresno State on Saturday or have Idaho lose at San Jose State. With that in mind here are the seeding scenarios for the Aggies:

With the Aggies' loss to Nevada on Thurday the best they can do is a 1-1 finish to the season. To do so they will have to defeat a Fresno State team that has played everyone in the WAC tough at home including wins over San Jose State, Idaho and Utah State and no loss at home to a WAC opponent coming by more than six points.

The Aggies would still earn the 2-seed IF Idaho lost at San Jose State on Saturday. Considering SJSU had just one conference win it would be highly unlikely for Idaho to lose at SJSU. Again, not exactly the kind of momentum the Aggies would want heading into the WAC Tournament but the Aggies went 0-2 in the final week of the season in 2009-10 and wound up winning the WAC Tournament.

As the 2-seed the Aggies would face Fresno State in the 1st round of the WAC Tournament.

The Aggies would drop to the 3-seed if they lose to Fresno State and Idaho defeats San Jose State. The Aggies and Vandals split the regular season meetings but Idaho would own the tiebreaker due to their split with Nevada. (WAC Tiebreaker Regulation 3).

The Aggies would face Hawai'i IF Hawai'i loses to Utah State (this would drop them to 6-8 and regardless of what LA Tech does, they would be the 6-seed) OR if Hawai'i defeats Utah State AND Louisiana Tech defeats Nevada. In this scenario, USU, LA Tech and UH would each finish 7-7 in league play. USU would win the 3-way tiebreaker and the 4-seed because they went 3-1 against the group while LA Tech went 2-2 and UH went 1-3. That would leave LA Tech and UH battling for the 5-seed which LA Tech would win due to their head-to-head sweep of Hawai'i.

The Aggies would face Louisiana Tech IF Hawai'i defeats Utah State AND a Louisiana Tech loses to Nevada. LA Tech would finish at 6-8 while UH and Utah State would both finish 7-7.
