The New Mexico State men's basketball team learned it's seeding and first round opponent on Sunday afternoon during the NCAA Tournament selection show. The Aggies received a 13-seed and will face 4-seed Indiana out of the Big Ten conference. The Aggies are 26-9 and coming off their second WAC tournament victory in three seasons. The Hoosiers are 25-8 and ranked 15th in the latest AP poll. Indiana finished the season with a 2-1 record on neutral courts and 5-6 away from Assembly Hall in Bloomington. The Aggies finished the season 5-1 on neutral courts and 7-5 away from the Pan American Center.
Indiana is led in scoring by freshman forward Cody Zeller who is averaging 15.5 points per game to go along with 6.4 rebounds per game. Forward Christian Watford is second in scoring at 12.0 points per game.
The Hoosiers are the top three point shooting team in the Big Ten and second overall in the country hitting 43.3 percent of their three point attempts. The Aggies will counter with the WAC's best three point defense and 68th best three point defense in the country holding opponents to just 32 percent from long range.
Both teams are strong on the glass as the Aggies lead the WAC and are third in the nation in rebounding (38.0 rebounds per game) and rebound percentage (58.1 percent) which ranks third nationally. The Hoosiers grab 31.8 rebounds per game, third best in the Big Ten and 144th national and have a rebound percentage of 52.4 percent which is fourth in the Big Ten and 95th nationally.
The Hoosiers average 77.3 points per game and allowing 65.5 points per game while New Mexico State averages 78.5 points per game while giving up 68.0 points per game.
The teams will meet in the second round of the NCAA Tournament in Portland, Oregon with the game times to be set at a later date.
