Aggies Fall To Texas Tech 12-7 In Midweek Game

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The New Mexico State baseball team (30-14) took an early 5-0 lead but fell 12-7 to Texas Tech (26-22) at Presley Askew Field, Tuesday, May 1.

The NM State bats started the game hot with senior Bryan Karraker blasting a solo-shot over the centerfield wall in the bottom of the first putting the Aggies on the board. After a scoreless second inning, the Aggies crossed the plate four times with a sacrifice fly from junior second baseman Parker Hipp, an RBI single from senior shortstop Zach Voight and a two-RBI double from junior centerfielder Kyle Phillips.

Starting pitcher Michael Ormseth of Las Cruces threw two innings and struck out three batters but was pulled after the second because he is the expected started against Hawai'i on Saturday, May 5. After Ormseth, NM State used eight more pitchers although it was junior right-hander Casey Collins who was credited with the loss as he gave up the go-ahead run in the top of the fifth. Collins threw two-thirds of an inning and gave up three runs on a homer over the leftfield wall.

Texas Tech scored four runs in the fourth, three in the fifth and three in the sixth to take a 10-6 lead, while holding the Aggies scoreless from the fifth through the eighth innings. The Aggie relievers held Texas Tech scoreless in the seventh and eighth but two more runs crossed the plate in the ninth to give the Red Raiders a 12-7 win.

The Aggies scored their seven runs on 11 hits while Texas Tech crossed the plate 12 times on 15 hits as both teams committed an error. Texas Tech reliever Blake Stewart earned the win and is 1-2 on the year and Collins falls to 3-4 on the season.

The Aggies play Hawai'i in Honolulu for a three-game series starting, Thursday, May 3 at 10:35p.m. (MT).
