RIVERSIDE, CA - In the first overtime match of the season, the New Mexico State soccer team tied UC Riverside, 1-1, in a double overtime contest.

Sophomore forward Layla Todd scored the first goal of the season for the Aggies (0-2-1) in their first match of the UC Riverside Tournament. NM State posted a season-high eight shots on goal and tied a season high with 14 shots in the 110 minutes of action.

"I thought we played really well," head coach Blair Quinn said. "It's a well organized team and they were playing at home.

"I was very proud of the girls not just for the effort but also the style of play. They played like we have been training them the last few weeks, and it was the first time it showed up."

At the end of the first period, UC Riverside scored in the 41st minute to take a 1-0 advantage into the break.

The Aggies came out of halftime firing but didn't covert until the final minutes of the second period. In the 88th minute, senior midfielder Elise Nordin and junior midfielder Mary Kate Koziol found Todd, who sank a shot from 17 yards away, to force overtime. The goal was Todd's fourth of her career, and the assist was a career first for Nordin and fourth for Koziol.

The defenses dominated extra time, and junior goalkeeper Jessica Schutter recorded a season-best seven saves.

The Aggies finish the tournament against Southern Utah, Sunday, Sept. 2 at 11 a.m.
