LAS CRUCES, N.M. - In the final home match of the 2012 season, the New Mexico State soccer team fell to UTSA, 2-1, in WAC play.
Freshman midfielder/forward Miranda Valdez scored her first career goal in the second half to launch the Aggie (2-12-3, 0-5-1 WAC) comeback on senior day. NM State recognized its seven seniors, midfielder/forward Lauren Cope, forward Cassie De Leon, defender Megan Hendler, defender Courtney Irwin, forward Yolanda McMillion, midfielder Elise Nordin and defender Vanessa Thomas after their final match in Las Cruces.
The Roadrunners (3-11-2, 2-3-2) had a 2-0 lead at halftime following goals in the 24th and 43rd minute. NM State had scoring opportunities in the first half with each team taking eight shots. The Aggies ended the game with a season-high 15 shots, and Valdez posted a game-high four shots.
"It's the same problem we've had all year," head coach Blair Quinn said. "We don't finish opportunities. That's the bottom line. We can talk about giving up two goals in the first half, but the reality is this game should have been at least 2-2 at halftime. We had two unbelievable opportunities that we didn't put away, and that's been what has bitten us all year."
In the second half, the Aggies cut UTSA's lead to 2-1, when Valdez found the back of the net after a pass from Thomas.
NM State concludes the regular season at Seattle, Oct. 26, and Idaho, Oct. 28.
