Aggies Get Past George Mason 55-52

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The New Mexico State women's basketball team derailed the George Mason Patriots 55-52 on the first day of the Aggie Hotel Encanto Thanksgiving Classic. Sophomore transfer Danesia Williamson collected a career high 18 points on the night.

Williamson powered through the first half of play with 14 of her buckets, which already surpassed her previous career total of 11. The 5-6 guard dropped four behind the three-point arc for a season high. She also worked for four assists on the night.

NM State went on an eight point run in the middle of the first half that included a three pointer by freshmen Sasha Weber and Abby Scott each. NM State shot 50 percent from the three-point arc in the first half and collected a 42.9 field-goal percentage in the opening 20 minutes of play.

The work of Williamson and Weber, who had two three's in the first half and three on the night, vaulted the Aggies to a 37-26 lead as the clock ran out on the first period. On the evening, Weber collected 13 total points with two assists and a steal.

A slower second half proved to be no issue for the Aggies as the team wrapped its second home win of the season 55-52 over the Patriots. Senior Kelsie Rozendaal picked up five points in the second period, and Abby Scott earned two steals in the half. Scott also finished the game with six points and two assists, all of which mark career-high stats for the freshman.

With nearly five minutes scoreless for NM State and the score halted at 47 Aggie points, the Patriots managed to take their only lead of the night by collected six points. A jumper by Williamson with just under three minutes left took back the 48-47 lead for NM State. A three by Weber moved NM State ahead even more. The Patriots and the Aggies traded buckets for the remainder, but Trakh's Aggies came out on top.

The Aggies combined for 12 second-chance points with a team total 31 rebounds and 12 assists.

The Aggies take back to the hardwood on Saturday, Nov. 24, against UC Irvine at 6:30 p.m. UC Irvine topped Drake in game one of the Aggie Hotel Encanto Thanksgiving Classic 69-64. Drake will meet George Mason at 4 p.m. in the Pan American Center.
