Aggie Soccer Opens Season With 3-1 Victory Over Nebraska-Omaha

The New Mexico State women's soccer program made a little more history as they opened the 2013 season with a 3-1 victory over visiting Nebraska-Omaha on Friday afternoon. Coming into the year with an 0-3-1 record in their four previous season openers, the 3-1 win gave the program its first season-opening victory.

The Aggies struggled all of last season to score, recording just eight goals on the year but came out firing and scored early and often in the first half. Junior forward Layla Todd, the team's leading goal scorer a year ago, recorded the season's first goal in the fifth minute to give the Aggies a 1-0 lead.

Just eleven minutes later senior midfielder Mary Kate Koziol found junior midfielder Bree Luhrsen who found the back of the net from ten yards out for the team's second goal. Koziol would find the back of the net in the 33rd minute to put the Aggies up 3-0, a lead they would maintain heading into halftime.

The Aggies were held scoreless in the second half but the large first half lead proved to be too much to overcome for the Mavs.

Senior goalkeeper Jessica Schutter got the start in goal and came up with one save in the first half and three in the second before Omaha scored on a header in the 90th minute to spoil the shutout.

The Aggies are back in action on Sunday at the NMSU Soccer Complex for a 1:00 p.m. kick-off against in-state rival New Mexico.
