LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The New Mexico State soccer team dropped 2-1 in a double overtime match to top-ranked Seattle U on Friday afternoon, Oct. 25 at the NM State Soccer Complex.

The Aggies (4-11-2; 1-7-1 WAC) came from behind in the second period with a goal from junior Layla Todd. The goal came off a rebound off the crossbar after a free-kick attempt from Salina Lucero. The goal is Todd’s fourth this year and the first assist for Lucero.

“This is really one of the better games we have played all year,” said head coach Blair Quinn. “This (Seattle U) is quite obviously the best team in the conference and although it’s hard to take right now, we can take a little consolation in the fact that I don’t think anyone else in the league has come anywhere near playing them that well.”

The goal came after Seattle scored off a penalty kick on the north side of the field in the 11th minute of regulation. Julia Basagno booted the ball from just beyond the goal box for an early lead.

With the score tied after the 84th minute of play, the teams ran out the clock and headed into two overtime periods before the score was decided.

Seattle came back in the 106th minute to score in a mix of players with an assist from Katie Prati to win its ninth straight conference game and remain atop the Western Athletic Conference standings with an undefeated record.

“The way the girls are working right now and continuing to fight and not quit because there is still a spot in the playoffs on the line, I just think they deserve more. We just have to come out Sunday and figure out a way to get it.”

The overtime match marks the seventh for NM State this season and fifth double overtime game.

The Aggies had six shots on goal to the Reghawks 12. Janae Cambra and Daisy Hernandez each had two in the contest.

NM State continues with WAC play on Sunday, Oct. 27 against Idaho at the NM State Soccer Complex at 1 p.m.
