LAS CRUCES, N.M. - Head volleyball coach Mike Jordan recently announced that three student-athletes have signed National Letters of Intent to attend school and play volleyball at New Mexico State University next fall.

Jordan Abalos, of Safford, Ariz., Kassandra Tohm, from Toronto, Ontario, and Ashlyn Brown, from Fort Meyers, Fla., will be a part of the defending Western Athletic Conference championship team in the fall of 2014.

“This is another great group of athletes that have the potential to make an immediate impact on our team,” said head coach Mike Jordan.

Brown played volleyball for Bishop Verot High School in Fort Meyers, Fla. The 2012 season was a successful year as she was named the district and team MVP, while also earning second team all-area honors. During the 2013 season, Brown marked two triple-doubles and nine double-doubles as she ranked No. 1 in the state of Florida among 4A teams in assists with 480 and also in kills with 288.

Brown is no stranger to having family members play in the NCAA, as many have played sports across the nation. Ashlyn is the younger sister of NM State graduate and volleyball player Ciara Brown. Ashlyn says Ciara taught her volleyball and how to be a setter, but most importantly Ciara has always been supportive and encouraging to her younger sister.

Abalos played four years (2010-14) of volleyball at Safford High School in Safford Ariz. She played under coach Janene Ward mainly as an outside hitter. Abalos not only excelled as an athlete but was also an outstanding student, she earned academic honors and made the Dean’s list. She was also a member of the National Honor Society, FFA, and Spanish Club. On the court, Abalos led her team to four-straight section championship titles and a state runner-up in 2012. This past season she posted 398 kills to lead her team to a 37-5 record.

Tohm, who played both the middle hitter and left-side positions in high school was a standout for the Sif Oliver Mowat C.I. Mustangs. She led her team to three state championships. The team also placed fourth at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA). Tohm was named Most Valuable Player multiple times, was named all-star player in many tournaments and earned Athlete of the Year three times. She was also a member of Team Ontario in 2013 that was the winner of the Nations Cup.
