NM State Equestrian Beats SMU 11-7

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The No. 5 New Mexico State Equestrian team jumped back in the win column Saturday at the NM State Equestrian Center with an 11-7 win over SMU. The Aggies are now 8-3 on the year.

NM State took Most Outstanding Player awards in Equitation on the Flat, Equitation over Fences and Reining.

The Aggies won the Hunter Seat competition 5-4, winning 3-2 in Equitation on the Flat and tying 2-2 in Equitation over Fences. Shannon Dooley was named MOP in Equitation on the Flat with an 84-78 win over SMU’s Schaefer Raposa. Hannah Swarthout defeated Julianna Fischer, 74-69, while Julie Frey beat Alex Butterworth, 82-76.

In Equitation over Fences, Amber Tassel earned MOP honors with an 89-85 win over SMU’s Sylvia De Toledo. Emily McConnell continued her winning ways with an 81-77 win over Butterworth of SMU. Elizabeth Solomon tied with Fischer of SMU, 82-82.

The Western team allowed SMU just three points on the day as the Aggies won Horsemanship, 3-1 and Reining took the win by a score of 3-2. In Horsemanship, Rianna Storey defeated Jaclyn White, 72-71, while Lauren DeVoe beat SMU’s Kristen Schramm, 74.5-73.5. Jessica Woolsey rounded out the Aggie points with a 74-69 win over SMU’s Hannah McCain.

In Reining, Tara Wilson earned the MOP award with a 72-70.5 win over the Mustangs’ Schramm. Marissa Bartmann beat Morgan Redwine, 70-69, while Stefanie Story earned the final point for NM State with a win against Courtney Line, 68.5-67.

The Aggies will be back in action on March 7 against Georgia in Athens, Ga., and then on March 8 versus Auburn in Auburn, Ala.
