LAS CRUCES, N.M. - Head track and field coach Orin Richburg announced Wednesday the signing of Jereme Santistevan, who will join the cross country team in 2014.

Santistevan attends Pojoaque Valley High School in Santa Fe, N.M., where he competed inboth cross country and track.

“We expect an athlete of his caliber to come in and contribute right away,” assistant coach Christopher Huff said. “He understands the vision that we have here at NM State and we’re very excited to have him on the team.”

In his career, Santistevan ran a three-mile run and a 5,000-meter run during the cross country season. His best times as a senior in the three-mile was 16:10.15 and his best time in the 5,000-meter run was 15:28. He finished first overall in the three-mile at the Los Alamos Invite and the 2013 NMAA 3A State Cross Country Championships.

As a junior, Santistevan finished with a time of 16:17.61 in the three-mile run and 16:55 in the 5,000-meter run. He also won the 2012 NMAA 3A State Cross Country Championship in the three-mile.

During the track season, Santistevan competed in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200-meter runs. He took first place in the 2013 New Mexico 3A-5A State Championship in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 9:55.98, which is the fastest he’s ever run this race. He also finished fourth in the 1,600-meter run and fifth in the 800-meter run at the state championships.

“It’s important to us that we continue to reach out to local athletes and get them to join the Aggies,” coach Huff said. “Jereme is a great addition to NM State.”
