MESA, ARIZ. - The New Mexico State baseball lost in heartbreaking fashion in their opening game of the 2014 WAC Baseball Championship tournament falling 11-10 to Utah Valley.

The Aggie offense got rolling early putting up four runs in the first inning to take a 4-0 lead. The Aggies added another run in the top of the second on an RBI single from Derek Umphres. Utah Valley would answer with a run in the bottom of the inning on a bunt single down the third base line.

The Aggies would add three more runs in the top of the fourth inning to take a commanding 8-1 lead. Starting pitcher Chris Bradley would work out of jams in the second, third, fourth and fifth innings as the Wolverines stranded two base runners in each of the frames. UVU would break through against the Aggies in the bottom of the sixth as Bradley walked the bases loaded to start the inning, his seventh, eighth and ninth walks of the game. He was lifted for reliever Matt Stein who came in and gave up an 0-1 double down the left field line clearing the bases and cutting the Aggies' lead to 8-5. UVU would add two more runs as the Aggies would change pitchers twice more in the inning taking an 8-7 lead into the home stretch.

The Aggies would add what would appear to be a pair of insurance runs in the top of the eighth to take a 10-7 lead but relief pitcher Riley Barr would give up a leadoff walk in the bottom of the inning followed by a single and a double to cut the Aggies' lead to 10-9. The Wolverines tied the game on a bunt single and throwing error by Barr tying the game at 10-10 with nobody out. Three batters later the Wolverines would take the lead, 11-10, on an RBI single.

Entering the ninth the Aggies would get a one out walk from Michael Medina. After pinch hitter Lucas Martinez struck out, Michael Paulson would deliver a two-out single putting Aggies on the corners. Derek Umphres would send a 2-0 pitch deep to left where it was caught for the final out.

Umphres finished the game 3-for-5 with two RBIs. Michael Medina went 3-for-4 at the plate with a pair of walks and came around to score three times. Michael Paulson finished 3-for-6 with an RBI and a run scored.

Starter Chris Bradley went 5.0 innings allowing four earned runs giving up just four hits but walking nine batters. Relief pitcher Riley Barr took the loss allowing four runs on six hits, three of the runs earned.

The Aggies will face 5-seed Seattle in an elimination game on Friday morning at 11:00 a.m. PDT.
