LAS CRUCES, N.M. - Senior Jennae Cambra scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season, however, it wasn’t enough as New Mexico State dropped a 3-2 decision to UNLV Sunday afternoon at the Soccer Athletic Complex.

10 minutes into the opening half Holly Abdelkader drilled a shot from 20 yards out to give the Aggies an early 1-0 advantage.

However, at 22:53 Dakota Blazak hit a high-bending shot that sneaked into the net to tie it at 1-1. Five minutes later Denali Murnan scored on a free kick to give UNLV (5-2-1) a 2-1 lead.

Moments before halftime Kaila Brinkman received a beautiful pass from Isabella Delgado and fired a shot that hit the crossbar and bounced in and UNLV led 3-1 at intermission.

Behind a late offensive surge Cambra added a goal at 88:07 in the second half.

“We made a couple mistakes and it turned into goals for them,” NM State head coach Freddy Delgado said following the match. “Against a good team like UNLV, we can’t afford to make minor mistakes because it will cost it – and it did today.”

Despite the setback Delgado was pleased with their overall play, especially in the midfield.

“I really think we worked them in the midfield and that’s encouraging to see,” added Delgado. “We continue to get better and players who have been out with injuries are returning and ready to play. We played a difficult nonconference schedule and it should prepare us for our conference schedule.”

The Aggies (1-9-0) open the Western Athletic Conference portion of the schedule Saturday, Sept. 27 at Texas Pan American.
