KANSAS CITY, MO - Katie Smith and Darien Faulkner each found the back of the net, but New Mexico State didn’t have an answer for the Kansas City offense and dropped a 4-2 decision Friday evening in Western Athletic Conference action at Durwood Stadium.

It didn’t take long for UNKC to find pay dirt. At 2:31 in the first period Hannah Chadick scored to put the ‘Roos up 1-0.

The Aggies responded at 21:04 when Alexys Brownwell passed it to Smith who launched a shot from 40 yards out to tie it at 1-all.

However, less than a minute later Alyssa Elver scored and UMKC (5-3-2, 1-0 WAC) reclaimed a one-goal lead. At 42:12 Whitney Lucas added a goal and the ‘Roos entered halftime with a 3-1 advantage.
Faulker scored at 59:05 when Layla Todd found her on a one-touch pass and buried it home in front of the goalkeeper.

Four minutes later Lucas added her second goal of the game to put the match out of reach.
“We are continuing to allow soft goals and it’s because of a lack of concentration,” NM State head coach Freddy Delgado said. “But I was proud how we fought back. Unfortunately, as soon as we scored Kansas City came right back and scored.”

NM State (1-11. 0-2 WAC) returns to the pitch Sunday at 10 a.m. at Chicago State.
