LAS CRUCES, N.M. - New Mexico State sophomore Moriah Mack has been named the Western Athletic Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for the week of Dec. 8-14, the conference announced Monday.
This is the first player of the week nod for the 5-8 guard from San Antonio, Texas, and Reagan High School. It is also the second-consecutive WAC Player of the Week honor for NM State this season as junior Sasha Weber won the award for the week of Dec. 1-7.
“Moriah is playing very well right now, she’s playing great defense and she is starting to look for her shot more,” Aggie head coach Mark Trakh said. “She’s shooting at a great percentage, so she needs to shoot it more. She is playing every possession extremely hard. We are all very proud of her.”
Mack netted a career-high 18 points against North Dakota State on Sunday to lead the Aggies to their third-straight victory. Not only did she lead the team in scoring, she also finished with a team-high eight rebounds, including six on the offensive side, and added a couple of assists and four steals in the 79-59 NM State win.
Mack connected on seven of her 10 shots on Sunday, including sinking both of her 3-point attempts. She also went 2-of-3 from the charity stripe.
On the season, Mack has started seven of eight games for the Aggies and is shooting over 50 percent both from the field (.535) and 3-point range (.571) while shooting 85.7 percent from the free-throw line (12-14) to lead the team. She averages 7.8 points per game, 4.0 rebounds per game and has accumulated 16 assists and 16 steals.
Mack and the rest of the Aggie squad will put their three-game winning streak on the line Tuesday night as NM State concludes its six-game homestand by welcoming Cal Poly to the Pan American Center. The game is set for a 7 p.m. start and will be broadcast on KGRT AM 570 with Adam Young on the call.
