The Daily Aggie :: 12/06/07

It's been a good week so far for the Aggie basketball teams. The women staved off the sometimes inevitable emotional dropoff after winning a big game (New Mexico) and held on to defeat another quality opponent in BYU, on the road in Provo yesterday evening. The Aggies did it again with defense, holding BYU to only 28% shooting in the second half and 32% for the game. The Aggies led by two points with 9 seconds left and Sherrell Neal had an opportunity at the foul line to put the game out of reach but was unable to take advantage missing the front end of a one-and-one. Fortunately the Aggie defense came through and BYU missed a jumper to tie the game. Free throws were a problem for both teams. The Aggies shot only 6-15 (40%) and the Cougars shot 12-22 (54%).

As Coach Spence mentioned in our weekly interview, the depth of his team was the key to escaping the emotional letdown. Ten players played for the Aggies, only two failed to score and only one played fewer than 10 minutes and only two played more than 30 minutes. The Aggies head home and will make the short trip to El Paso on Saturday afternoon to take on the UTEP Miners in round two of the Battle of I-10.

Don't forget that the men's battle with UTEP is scheduled for a 6:00 tipoff at the Pan American Center.

Be sure to check out the post from our friends at Parsing The WAC. They go through team by team in the conference to try to find out what the heck has been going on with the league's struggles in the non-conference schedule.

The BYU athletic website gives their recap of last night's Aggie victory over the Cougars.

Austin Ward of the Star-Tribune (Wyoming) lets Cowboys fans know something that the Aggie fans have known for a while, Wyoming and NMSU have scheduled a home-and-home series for 2008 and 2009. The Aggies will host Wyoming on September 13th next season and will travel to Laramie on September 12th in 2009. The Aggies also take on Nebraska in Lincoln, UTEP in El Paso and host UNM at Aggie Memorial Stadium to round out their non-conference slate in 2009.

The good folks from NCAA Hoops Digest were not-so-live blogging the UNT/Texas battle and took a minute to voice their displeasure at Jack Nixon referring to our old conference mates the University of North Texas as North Texas State University on the radio broadcast of Saturday's NMSU/UNT game in the Lou Henson Classic (See the 10:33 entry). The radio broadcast from Las Cruces was also broadcast in the Denton area for Mean Green fans (in case you were wondering). Kudos Jack, keep up the good work!

The WAC will be sending one team to the Great Alaskan Shootout each year starting next season. (Thanks Roberto)

Aggie fans can expect at least 400 UTEP students to show up at the Pan Am for Saturday night's Battle of I-10 Round II. UTEP was giving out 200 pairs of tickets to students who came and met UTEP coach Tony Barbee yesterday. (Thanks Roberto)
