Aggie Softball Picks Up Two Wins In Arizona

TEMPE, AZ - The New Mexico State softball team continued play at the Diamond Devil Invitational by winning its two games on Saturday, first defeating Boise State, 4-3, before taking care of Colorado State for the second time this season, 7-3.

The Aggies (8-6) move two games over .500 for the first time this season and finish the first two days of the tournament with a 3-1 record. NM State plays its final game in Tempe on Sunday versus host and 19th-ranked Arizona State.

Junior right-hander Makayla McAdams, a Tucson native, returned to her home state and picked up her first two wins of the season, one in a starting role and another in relief. Senior Staci Rodriguez hit her fourth home run of the season to tie her with Malena Padilla for the team lead while fellow senior Kelsey Dodd slammed her second homer of the year.

McAdams kicked things off for the Aggies by throwing a complete game against Boise State. She only allowed three runs on four hits while striking out three Broncos.

NM State immediately took an early lead after freshman Rachel Rodriguez opened the Aggie portion of the first inning with a triple down the right-field line. A couple of batters later her older sister, Staci, brought her home with a sacrifice fly to give NM State an early 1-0 edge.

The score would remain the same until the top half of the fourth when Boise State tied the game at 1-1 with a single and some savvy base running. The game would be knotted up heading into the final two innings of the matchup.

The Aggies, however, had three big hits in their half of the fifth, two doubles and a long ball. Freshman Nue Sivia started the inning with a double down the right-field line. After two outs, reigning Western Athletic Conference Hitter of the Week Emma Adams came up and brought Sivia in with a double of her own. She was followed by Staci Rodriguez, who hit one over the left-field fence to pick up her second and third RBIs of the game and give NM State a 4-1 advantage.

The Broncos would get to within a run after marking two runs in the sixth, but McAdams ended the rally with a strikeout and then proceeded to put down Boise State in order in the final inning.

Freshman Dallas McBride would get the start in the circle for the Aggies versus Colorado State, whom NM State beat 8-2 earlier this season in Las Cruces during the Hotel Encanto Invitational. She would proceed to strike out six batters over the first three innings as the teams would duel to a 0-0 tie after three complete innings.

The Aggies would strike first as Staci Rodriguez reached on an error in the top half of the fourth and was then brought in by Dodd’s homer over the left-field fence. Dodd seems to like seeing the Colorado State green as her two home runs this season have both come against the Rams.

The game would again be tied as Colorado State got the two runs back in its portion of the fourth after a couple of hits and a couple of walks. Karysta Donisthorpe would enter the game in relief and finish off the inning. McAdams would enter an inning later with the game still tied at 4-4 and thwart a Ram bases-loaded rally.

NM State took advantage of their opponent’s missed opportunity by pouncing on its own opportunity, putting up four runs in the sixth to open up the game. The big hit came off of McBride’s bat as the freshman dual threat hit a double to left field with the bases loaded, bringing in all three runners.

Colorado State would get a run back in its half of the sixth but the Aggies got it right back in the top of the seventh and McAdams would shut down the Rams from there to pick up her second win of the day.

NM State concludes participation in the Diamond Devil Invite with its matchup against the 19th-ranked Sun Devils tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m.
