LAS CRUCES, N.M. - New Mexico State freshman Rian Nials was selected as the Western Athletic Conference Women’s Soccer Defensive of the Week for her action last week.

In the Aggies only game last week, the freshman from Radium Springs, N.M./Las Cruces Mayfield returned to the field for the first time since Aug. 30.

Entering Sunday’s game with UT Rio Grande Valley at halftime with the Vaqueros leading 1-0, Nials saved all three UTRGV shots on goal in the second half.

Her clean half of play allowed NM State to rally behind a pair of second half goals to open conference play with a 2-1 victory.

It was Nials first collegiate career victory in goal.

“Rian did a great job in goal for us in the second half,” said NM State Coach Freddy Delgado. “She stopped every shot at her and gave the offense a chance. It’s a great honor for her and the team.”

The WAC also selected Missouri-Kansas City sophomore Kara Priest as the league’s offensive player of the week after scoring a goal and two assists in UMKC’s 6-0 shutout of Chicago State.

The Aggies have a pair of games at home this weekend. NM State faces CSU Bakersfield at 3 p.m. on Friday afternoon, then meets Grand Canyon at 1 p.m. on Sunday. Both matches are at the NM State Soccer Athletic Complex.
