LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The NM State women’s soccer team returned to the win column Friday afternoon at the Soccer Athletic Complex with a 5-1 victory over Chicago State.

The Aggies (4-11, 3-3 WAC) were aggressive on the offensive end from start to finish, outshooting the Cougars (0-15, 0-6 WAC) 33-5 to along with a 9-0 advantage in corner kicks.

“I think it was a good overall win for the team,” assistant coach Ben Parman said.

Sophomore Alexis Rienks opened up the scoring for NM State when she zipped past her defender and blasted a shot into the back of the net on a pass from Rebecca Mazzie just 2:07 minutes into the match.

Less than two minutes later, Amber Jones booted in the equalizer for Chicago State on a penalty kick.

Holly Abdelkader would regain the 2-1 lead for NM State when Aileen Galicia found Abdelkader up the middle for her fourth goal of the season.

The Aggies’ persistent pressure on the offensive end continued to put pressure on the Chicago State back line until Abdelkader connected with Audrey Chavez for NM State’s third goal of the half.

With a 3-1 lead heading into the second half, Rian Nials replaced Ashley Martin between the pipes for the Aggies.

Sabrina Ruiz didn’t waste any time at the start of the second half and rifled in a shot past CSU’s keeper in the 46th minute to extend the NM State lead, 4-1. Devin Hart knocked in the fifth and final goal for the Aggies in the 60th minute.

“It’s definitely a young team,” said Parman, when asked about the progression of the underclassmen. “We started the season with how many freshmen and now they are getting a little bit more seasoned. Those freshmen aren’t really playing like freshmen anymore. They’re getting more and more confident and minutes under their belt.”

Of the 14 points tallied by the Aggies on Friday, six came from the freshmen. Chavez and Ruiz each knocked in goals while Mazzie and Galicia dished out assists.

The Aggies will play their final home match of the season on Sunday when they play host to Missouri-Kansas City at 1 p.m. The NM State soccer program will also honor its seniors prior to the match.
