Aggie Football Stuns Idaho 55-48 In Overtime, Snaps 17-Game Losing Streak

The New Mexico State football team snapped the nation's longest losing streak, 17 games, with a thrilling 55-48 overtime victory over Idaho on Saturday night which was sealed by an incredible interception by freshman defensive back Terrill Hank who trapped the ball with his ankles. The Aggies scored 41 points in the second half and seven more in overtime to complete the come from behind victory.

Trailing 23-7 coming out of halftime, Andrew Allen was intercepted on the Aggies' first play from scrimmage in the second half. Idaho would convert the turnover into a touchdown putting the Vandals up 30-7 just 14 seconds into the second half. The Aggies would respond scoring 14 unanswered points on a touchdown throw from Andrew Allen to Jordan Bergstrom and another touchdown throw from Andrew Allen to Greg Hogan to make the score 30-21 with 6:39 left in the third quarter.

Idaho would add to their lead on a 40-yard field goal with 1:31 left in the third quarter putting them up 33-21. On the ensuing Aggie drive, wide receiver Josh Bowen would fumble the ball after eluding a defender on a short pass play. Idaho would recover on the Aggie 32-yard line and would score a touchdown 47 seconds into the fourth quarter putting them ahead 40-21 with 14:13 left to play.

The Aggies offense would once again answer the score on a 62-yard touchdown pass from Andrew Allen to Royce Caldwell. The Aggies would go for two but were unable to convert and Idaho would lead 40-27 with 13:30 left in the fourth quarter.

The Aggie defense would force an Idaho punt and take over on their own 6-yard line. After a 57-yard pass reception by Tyrain Taylor, Larry Rose would take it in from one yard out to cut Idaho's lead to just six at 40-34 with 9:51 left to play.

Idaho would score with 5:09 left to play scoring a touchdown and converting a two-point play to go ahead 48-34. The Aggies would score a touchdown with 3:56 left to play cutting the Vandals' lead to just a touchdown, 48-41. After the Aggies forced another Idaho punt, the offense would take over on their own 32 yard line. The Aggies tie the game at 48 with 51 seconds left to play on another Larry Rose touchdown from two yards out.

Idaho would win the coin toss in overtime sending the Aggies out on offense first. After taking losses on first down and third down, the Aggies would face a 4th and 22 situation. Backup quarterback Nick Jeanty who had come in to replace Andrew Allen who was injured on the Aggies' final drive in the fourth quarter, threaded the needle on a pass to Josh Bowen to pick up the improbable first down. Larry Rose would cap the drive with his fourth rushing touchdown of the day putting the Aggies ahead 55-48.

On Idaho's second play of overtime, Terrill Hanks came up with an incredible interception of Idaho quarterback Matt Linehan sealing the victory. Linehan's pass was tipped by Javahn Ferguson and Hanks trapped the ball with his ankles not allowing it to fall incomplete.

The Aggies finished with 641 yards of offense as Larry Rose III rushed for 212 yards and four touchdowns while eclipsing the 1,000 yard mark for the second straight season and becoming the first back-to-back 1,000 yard rusher since Denvis Manns rushed for over 1,000 in four straight seasons. He also became the first Aggie back to rush for four touchdowns in a game since Chris Barnes in 1999.

Andrew Allen finished the game 22-of-38 for 300 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. Nick Jeanty was 2-for-2 on the night including his 23 yard pass on 4th and 22 in overtime.
