Aggie Softball Defeats UTEP, Incarnate Word To Improve To 4-0

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - Fiana Finau hit a three-run home run to end the game against Incarnate Word to help the NM State softball team to a 13-3 victory against the Cardinals as the Aggies went 2-0 on the day. The Aggies began the day with a 4-1 victory over Battle of I-10 rival UTEP.

Game One

The Aggies (4-0) amassed nine hits and four RBIs against UTEP (2-2). Rachel Rodriguez, Kelsey Horton and Brenna Nakamura each racked up two hits. Karysta Donisthorpe threw six strikeouts in 19 batters faced through four innings. UTEP's Kaitlin Fifield had two strikeouts and three walks in 22 batters faced over four innings.

The Aggies jumped out to an early lead in the first inning. Rachel Rodriguez reached first base and stole second before a Finau single brought Rodriguez home for the first score of the game. Emma Adams scored off Tatum Reedy's sacrifice fly to give NM State a 2-0 advantage after the first inning.

Brenna Nakamura doubled to center field to open the second inning. She then added a run for the Aggies as Rodriguez reached first base on her first RBI of the season to give NM State a 3-0 lead.

The Miners cut into the lead in the top of the third with a one RBI double. Two batters later, Karysta Donisthorpe garnered her fourth strikeout of the game as UTEP left two runners stranded to end the inning.

The Aggies extended the lead again in the fourth inning as Emma Adams' racked up her second hit of the game to bring B. Nakamura home. The run gave NM State a 4-1 advantage.

Game Two

NM State racked up 13 RBIs and 15 hits in 29 at-bats against the Cardinals. Makayla McAdams threw two strikeouts in 13 at-bats. Kayla Green chipped in two strikeouts in six batters faced. Incarnate Word had three errors, and Kristin Herbert threw one strikeout in 15 batters faced.

The Aggies took a 1-0 lead in the first inning against Incarnate Word as Haley Nakamura scored to give Finau her first RBI of the day. In the second inning, Reedy, H. Nakamura and B. Nakamura each crossed the plate to extend the home team's lead to 4-0.

NM State stretched the advantage again in the third inning as Fahren Glackin's double brought Horton home. This was Glackin's first RBI as an Aggie. Glackin then scored as Reedy reached first base. Amy Bergeson, Reedy and H. Nakamura also scored in the inning as the Aggies took a 9-0 advantage.

The Cardinals cut into the lead in the fourth inning with two runs. They added a third run in the top of the fifth inning before Finau's first home run of the season gave NM State a 13-3 win over Incarnate Word.

The Aggies play again tomorrow as they host UTEP at 10:30 a.m. at the NM State Softball Complex in the final game of the NM State Invitational.
