LAS CRUCES, N.M. - Senior Cameron Haskins clinched the series sweep over Towson on Sunday with a walk-off RBI single on Sunday afternoon at Presley Askew Field. It was the first series sweep for the Aggies since April 6, 2014 against Northern Colorado, and the first 3-0 start since 2014.

The game start off with a bang as Towson shortstop Richie Palacios doubled in the second at-bat of the game. A.J. Gallo’s single up the middle plated Palacios for the first run of the game.

Aggies answered right back as Towson pitcher Kevin Ross walked junior Daniel Johnson and hit both juniors L.J. Hatch and Trey Stine to load the bases. Junior Jaron Balman’s RBI fielder’s choice to the third baseman scored Johnson, with Hatch out at third. A wild pitch during the next at-bat moved Stine and Balman to second and third, respectively. Junior Austin Botello brought in Stine with an RBI single to left. Senior Joseph Koerper doubled down the right field line, scoring Balman. Junior Mason Fishback singled to left, plating Botello. In total the four runs gave NM State a 4-1 lead after one inning.

Koerper added a run in the third inning with a single through the left side of the infield, bringing home junior Tommy Bell.

Towson cut into the Aggies’ 5-1 lead in the top of fourth, scoring two. However, L.J. Hatch’s sac fly to center scored Johnson, adding an important insurance run to make it 6-3.

Towson took the lead in the top of the sixth as four hits led to four runs, making the score 7-6. The Aggies were able to tie it up in the home half with a sacrifice fly to left by Trey Stine that plated Hatch.

NM State retook the lead 8-7 in the bottom of the seventh, as Mason Fishback hit a RBI single to left that brought home senior Jay Sheeley from second.

Towson tied the game again in the top of the eighth as an errant pickoff throw to first scored the runner from third.

Looking to break the tie in the home half off eighth, back-to-back singles by Botello and Sheeley and a walk by Koerper loaded the bases with two outs. However, the Aggies would leave the bases juiced as Fishback would go down swinging on a 1-2 pitch to end the inning.
Hoping to avoid extra innings in the bottom of the ninth, junior Brent Sakurai earned a leadoff walk, with Johnson taking a pitch off the wrist in the following at-bat. Trey Stine reached on a fielder’s choice that saw Sakurai gunned down at third. With runners at first and second, Cameron Haskins came in to pinch hit for Balman. On a 0-1 count, Haskins drove the ball into right field forcing the right fielder to dive and have the ball bounce out of his glove when landing. With the ball still in play, Johnson dashed home to score the winning run, giving the Aggies the 9-8 victory.

NM State is back at home next weekend as they welcome Maine for a four-game set.
