Aggie Swimming And Diving Finishes Second At WAC Championships

HOUSTON, TX - NM State finished in second place at the 2016 Western Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championships on Saturday. The Aggies finished with 488 points, behind only Northern Arizona with 807.5 points.

Senior Dorottya Lennert was named the WAC Swimmer of the Year and freshman Lauren Wood was named WAC Freshman of the Year.

“I'm really proud of the way our group fought this week,” said head coach Rick Pratt. “It was not a perfect week by any means, and we had some injuries and adversity that set us back. Despite that, we had several girls step up and push through till the end. Dory really led our group and I'm very proud of her efforts this week. We had a lot of personal best swims and dives and have much to be proud of.”

In the Platform dive, senior Lauren Reifel finished seventh with a score of 202.35. Freshman Raina Brommer finished with a score of 187.65, with freshman MacKinna Hauff finishing with a score of 169.25.

In the 1650-yard Freestyle, junior Nattie French finished sixth with a time of 17:13.84. Senior Mackenzie Soper finished with a time of 17:18.13, senior Emily Nightingale finishing with a time of 17:24.21 and sophomore Gabby Sanchez finishing with a time of 17:35.09.

In the 200-yard Backstroke, freshman Lanie McAlpin finished 10th with a time of 2:03.41. Gabby Sanchez finished with a time of 2:09.17.

In the 100-yard Freestyle, sophomore Picabo Bender finished with a time of 52.64.

In the 200-yard Breaststroke, Lauren Wood finished second with a time of 2:12.67, which qualified her for the Division-I B standard cut. Sophhomore Jennifer Brennecke finished seventh with a time of 2:17.97. Freshman Hanna McGowan finished with a time of 2:20.07, freshman Barbora Krizanova finished with a time of 2:20.47 and junior Logan Morris finished with a time of 2:25.27.

In the 200-yard Butterfly, Dorottya Lennert finished second with a time of 1:59.76. Sophomore Jannah Sonnenschein finished fifth with a time of 2:02.93. Nattie French finished with a time of 2:11.09.

In the 400-yard Freestyle Relay, the Aggies finished sixth with a team of Dorottya Lennert, Picabo Bender, Jannah Sonnenschein and senior Cassandra Rupp combining for a time of 3:27.80.
