Aggie Softball Run Rules Southern Utah 13-3

LAS VEGAS, NV - The NM State softball team used a big fifth inning to take the lead and never looked back as they defeated Southern Utah 13-3 on Friday at Eller Media Stadium in the UNLV Classic.

The Aggies (14-6) scored 13 runs and garnered 11 RBIs on 15 hits. Rachel Rodriguez led the team with three runs and two RBIs on four hits. Kayla Green pitched 3.0 innings and allowed just two hits while holding the Thunderbirds (3-16) scoreless.

Southern Utah scored three runs and had three RBIs on six hits. Cheyenne Cudahy pitched 5.0 innings and allowed seven runs and seven RBIs on nine hits. She had three strikeouts in 24 batters faced.

After two scoreless innings, the Aggies took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning. Rodriguez hit a single to right field and then stole second before Haley Nakamura hit a triple down the right field line to score Rodriguez. Kelsey Horton then hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score H. Nakamura.

Southern Utah scored three runs in the bottom of the third inning to take the lead. Kylee Wolf hit a double to left center and Payton Hart was walked. Jordan Theurer hit a single up the middle to load the bases and Morgan Leonard hit a three RBI triple to right field.

Following a quiet fourth inning, the Aggies scored five runs in the top of the fifth inning. Victoria Castro hit a single to right center before Rodriguez hit a triple to left center to score Castro. H. Nakamura walked and K. Horton hit a single to the pitcher to score Rodriguez. Fiana Finau hit a double to left center to score H. Nakamura and Horton. Fahren Glackin then hit a single up the middle to score Finau as the Aggies took a 7-3 advantage.

NM State scored six more runs in the top of the sixth inning. B. Nakamura singled up the middle, Tatum Reedy hit a single to left field, and Castro hit a bunt single to load the bases. Rodriguez then hit an RBI single to left field to score B. Nakamura. Nue Sivia was walked to score Reedy and Castro scored as Horton hit a sacrifice fly to right field. Finau reached on an error by the center fielder and Rodriguez scored. Misty Hoohuli then hit a single and advanced to second on an error by the left fielder as Kennedy Johnson and Finau scored to give the Aggies a 13-6 advantage.

The Aggies play again at 3:30 p.m. MT as they face Drake at Eller Media Stadium.
