Aggie Softball Run-Rules Rival Lobos 11-3

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - Fiana Finau hit a home run, a double and a single to lead the NM State softball team to an 11-3 victory over Rio Grande rival New Mexico on Tuesday night at the NM State Softball Complex.

The Aggies (17-8) scored 11 runs and collected nine RBIs on 14 hits. Finau was 3-for-3, scored two runs and had four RBIs. Makayla McAdams pitched 3.1 innings and faced 17 batters.

New Mexico (11-8) scored three runs and had two RBIs on six hits. Colette Robert pitched 2.1 innings and allowed seven runs on 10 hits in 18 batters faced.

New Mexico scored in the top of the first inning. Cheyenne Smith hit a single to left field and scored as Mariah Rimmer doubled down the left field line to give the Lobos a 1-0 advantage.

The Aggies took the lead in the bottom of the first inning. Rodriguez was walked, stole second and advanced to third as Horton grounded out to third base. Corrin Green was walked to put runners on the corners before Finau hit a home run to give NM State a 3-1 advantage.

After a scoreless second inning, New Mexico knotted the score at 3-3 in the top of the third inning. Smith was walked and advanced to third as Rimmer hit a single down the left field line. Casados then hit a single to left field to score Smith. Rimmer advanced to third on the play and then scored on an Aggie error.

NM State regained the advantage in the bottom of the third inning. Emma Adams singled to right center, Horton singled to left field and Green was walked to load the bases. Misty Hoohuli entered as a pinch runner for Green. The runners advanced and Adams scored on an illegal pitch before Finau hit a double to right center to score Horton. Victoria Castro then hit a single to shortstop to score Hoohuli as the Aggies took a 6-3 lead.

The Aggies extended the lead in the bottom of the fifth. Finau hit a single to right center, Castro singled to left field and Brennalyn Nakamura singled to left field to load the bases. The runners advanced and Finau scored on a passed ball before Tatum Reedy hit a single up the middle to score Castro. Rachel Rodriguez hit a single to third base to score B. Nakamura and Adams doubled up the middle to score Reedy. Horton then hit a double to the left side to score Rodriguez as NM State captured an 11-3 victory.

NM State plays again on Friday as they face USC Upstate at 9:00 a.m. MT in the USF Under Armour Showcase.
