New Mexico State End Season With 58-56 Loss At Saint Mary's In First Round Of NIT

After suffering a heartbreaking loss at the buzzer against Bakersfield in the WAC Tournament final, the Aggies fell against in devastating fashion at Saint Mary's in the first round of the 2016 NIT. Trailing by as many as 13 point in the second half, the Aggies held Saint Mary's without a field goal over the final 4:24 while outscoring the Gaels 10-0 to forge a 56-56 tie with just two seconds remaining after a Tanveer Bhullar layup.

On the ensuing inbounds, Braxton Huggins was called for a foul putting Saint Mary's guard Joe Rohan on the free throw line for a one-and-one. Rohan would hit both and Ian Baker's three-quarter court heave as time expired hit the backboard.

Trailing by four points, the Aggies forced five Saint Mary's turnovers in the final 2:12 and eventually tied the game on Bhullar's layup. The Aggies also saw several shows rim in and out including an Ian Baker lay-in with 33 seconds left that would have also tied the game.

Pascal Siakam recorded his 27th double-double of the season finishing with 19 points and 14 rebounds while Evansville's Egidijus Mockevicius for the most double-doubles in NCAA Division I this season.

The Aggies finish the season with a 23-11 record.
