Aggie Baseball Falls To Arizona 11-8

TUCSON, AZ - The New Mexico State baseball team fell to Arizona 11-8 on Tuesday at Hi Corbett Field. The lone bright spot was Daniel Johnson, who went four-for-five at the plate with two RBI and was just a double shy of the cycle.

The Wildcats jumped out to an early lead, scoring four runs in the first inning. The first run came on a single to center, scoring a run from third. The other three runs came on a three-run blast to left center, Bobby Dalbec’s first homer of the game. The Wildcats added three more runs over the next two innings.

Down 7-0 in the fifth, the Aggies showed some life, with L.J. Hatch earning a four pitch walk. Daniel Johnson singled up the middle, moving Hatch to second. Dan Hetzel doubled to left center, clearing the bases and scoring Hatch and Johnson. Austin Botello singled to right to score Hetzel. The Aggies cut the lead to 7-3.

The Wildcats got a run back in the fifth with Dalbec hitting an absolute shot over the centerfield wall, sending the ball about 440 feet.

NM State cut the lead back to four runs as Daniel Johnson tripled down the right field line, scoring L.J. Hatch.

Arizona scored their ninth, 10th and 11th runs in the home half of the inning.

The Aggies got three runs of their own in the eighth, as Mason Fishback was plunked to get to first. Greg Popylisen singled to right. Roman Trujillo doubled to right field scoring Fishback. Popylisen came home on a passed ball during the next at-bat. L.J. Hatch scored Trujillo with a ground out to short. After eight, the Aggies trailed 11-7.

NM State would get its final run in the top of the ninth as Daniel Johnson led off with a solo slam to right field.

The Aggies travel to Riverside, Calif. this weekend for a weekend series with UC Riverside.
