Aggie Softball Holds Off Bakersfield 6-5

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - After an hour and 20 minute weather delay, the NM State softball team came from behind to defeat CSU Bakersfield 6-5 on a rainy Friday night at the NM State Softball Complex.

The Aggies (30-19, 9-1 WAC) scored six runs and amassed six RBIs on five hits. Tatum Reedy went 1-for-3 with a run and four RBIs after she hit her seventh home run of the season. Makayla McAdams pitched 4.1 innings and had three strikeouts in 20 batters faced.

CSU Bakersfield (13-27, 5-5 WAC) scored five runs and had five RBIs in seven hits. Amber Mills pitched 3.1 innings and had one strikeout in 19 batters faced.

CSU Bakersfield scored in the top of the first inning. Julea Cavazos reached first on an Aggie error. She advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Alex Simmons and then moved to third on another error by the home team. Chris Hipa singled to the pitcher to score Cavazos as the Roadrunners took a 1-0 advantage.

After the delay, the Aggies took the lead in the bottom of the second inning. Corrin Green was walked and advanced to second as Victoria Castro hit a single to left field. Jovanni Felix entered as a pinch runner for Green before Emma Adams was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Reedy then hit a grand slam over straightaway center as NM State took a 4-1 lead. The home run was Reedy’s seventh of the season.

CSU Bakersfield cut into NM State’s lead in the top of the third inning. Cavazos hit a bunt single. Simmons then reached first on a fielder’s choice and advanced to second on the throw, while Cavazos reached second on an Aggie error and then moved to third base. Both runners scored on a ground out as the Aggies maintained a 4-3 lead.

NM State extended their lead in the bottom of the third inning. Kelsey Horton was walked before Fiana Finau and Green reached on back-to-back errors by CSU Bakersfield. Horton scored and Finau moved to third base as Castro hit a sacrifice fly to center field. Finau then scored as Adams reached first on a fielder's choice.

The visiting team scored again in the top of the fifth inning. Adrianna Cardoza singled through the left side. Cavazos reached on a fielder’s choice and advanced to second on an Aggie error as Cardoza was tagged out on the play. Cavazos scored as Simmons hit a triple to right center. Hipa hit a single to left center to score Simmons as CSU Bakersfield cut the Aggies lead to 6-5. NM State then used a two strikeouts and a line out in the top of the seventh to secure the victory.

The Aggies take the field again tomorrow for Senior Night as they face CSU Bakersfield in a double header with the first game set for 4:00 p.m. at the NM State Softball Complex. Game two is scheduled for 6:00 p.m., with the Senior Night ceremony immediately following the series finale.
