Aggie Softball Sweeps Series With Bakersfield

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Emma Adams broke the program record for career doubles with her 43rd double in game one of Senior Day as the NM State softball team topped CSU Bakersfield 12-1. The Aggies defeated the visiting team 4-2 in game two to complete the series sweep. Friday, NM State won 6-5. After the game, NM State honored Karysta Donisthorpe, Adams, Fiana Finau, Makayla McAdams, Brennalyn Nakamura and Tatum Reedy for Senior Night.

Game One

The Aggies (32-19, 11-1 WAC) scored 12 runs and collected 12 RBIs on 10 hits. Rachel Rodriguez went 2-for-3 and scored three runs with a stolen base. Donsithorpe pitched 5.0 innings and had four strikeouts in 24 batters faced.

CSU Bakersfield (13-29, 5-7 WAC) scored one run on five hits. Lyndsay Klimenko pitched 3.2 innings and allowed six runs on five hits in 23 batters faced.

The Aggies took the lead in the bottom of the first inning. Rodriguez hit a single to left field and advanced to second as Adams grounded out. Kelsey Horton was walked before both runners advanced on a wild pitch. Corrin Green then hit a home run over left center as NM State took a 3-0 advantage. This was Green’s fifth home run of the season.

NM State scored again in the bottom of the second inning. Rodriguez reached first base on an error by the second baseman and then stole second. Adams was walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch, while Rodriguez moved to third on the play. Rodriguez scored as Finau hit a sacrifice fly to give the home team a 4-0 lead.

CSU Bakersfield cut into the lead in the top of the third inning. Alex Simmons hit a double to left center and Sydney Raeber was walked to put runners on first and second. Chris Hipa then hit a single and advanced to second on an Aggie throwing error, while Raeber advanced to third. On the same play, Simmons scored on an Aggie fielding error to leave the Aggies with a 4-1 advantage.

The Aggies extended their lead in the bottom of the third. Victoria Castro was walked and stole second before Fahren Glackin was walked to put runners on first and second. Reedy then hit a three-RBI home run.

Nakamura hit a double to right field. Rodriguez then doubled to right field and advanced on the throw, while B. Nakamura moved to third. Rodriguez and B. Nakamura scored as Adams hit a double to right field. Finau was walked and Adams advanced to third on a passed ball before pinch hitter Kennedy Johnson hit a three-RBI home run to give NM State a 12-1 advantage after three innings. The Aggies held the visiting team scoreless through two more innings to capture the victory.

Game Two

The Aggies scored four runs and garnered three RBIs on eight hits. Corrin Green went 2-for-3 and scored one run. McAdams pitched 4.0 innings and had four strikeouts in 16 batters faced.

CSU Bakersfield scored two runs and had two RBIs on five hits. Amber Mills pitched 6.0 innings and had one strikeout in 33 batters faced.

After retiring CSU Bakersfield in order in the top of the first and second innings, the Aggies took the lead in the bottom of the second inning. Green hit a single to left field and advanced on a throwing error by the left fielder. Jovanni Felix entered as a pinch runner for Green and then scored as Castro hit a triple to left field.

B. Nakamura hit a bunt double to the catcher to put runners on second and third. Castro scored and B. Nakamura advanced to third on a wild pitch. B. Nakamura then scored as Amy Bergeson grounded out to give NM State a 3-0 advantage after the second inning.

CSU Bakersfield scored in the top of the third inning. Kaylynn Burt doubled to right center and advanced to third on a ground out. Julea Cavazos hit a single up the middle to score Burt as the visiting team cut the Aggies lead to 3-1.

NM State extended their lead in the bottom of the fifth inning. Green hit a single to the shortstop and advanced to second as Reedy was walked. Nue Sivia hit a double to left field to score Green as the Aggies took a 4-1 advantage.

CSU Bakersfield scored in the top of the seventh. Jo Larios singled to right field and then scored as Burt hit a triple down the right field line to cut the NM State lead to 4-2. Donisthorpe, who was in as a relief pitcher, collected her final out at the NM State Softball Complex as the Aggies closed out the game to capture the win.

The Aggies take the field again on Friday as they face UMKC at 1:00 p.m. MT at the Missouri 3&2 Complex in Kansas City, Mo.
