LAS CRUCES, N.M. - Two three-run blasts and a solo shot helped the Aggies to a 14-4 win over Sacramento State in eight innings on Friday. This was the most runs NM State has scored in a game since scoring 17 runs against Chicago State on March 24. Junior Mason Fishback’s five-RBI night now makes him the fifth different Aggie to rack up five RBI in a game this season, joining Daniel Johnson, L.J. Hatch, Trey Stine and Joseph Koerper.

Junior Marcel Renteria came out of the gate red hot, as he struck the first Hornet batter out on three pitches. He then proceeded to get a fly out and a four pitch strikeout to retire the side.

NM State jumped on the board in the first as Daniel Johnson led off with a base hit to center. Greg Popylisen followed that up with a double down the right field line. Dan Hetzel drove in Johnson on a single through the left side of the infield for the game’s first run.

Sacramento State didn’t allow the Aggies to lead for long. With two out in the top of the second, Brandon Hunley put a ball over the right centerfield wall for a solo home run, tying the game at one run apiece.

The Aggies answered right back, as Trey Stine hit a solo shot of his own to right field in the bottom of the second. Daniel Johnson got his second single of the night, this one to left field. Greg Popylisen drove in Johnson with a double in the right center gap, putting NM State up 3-1.

The Hornets got a run back in the top of the third. Sac state hit a double and later scored on a single to right to pull within one run at 3-2.

NM State took over in the home half of the third as Austin Botello drew a leadoff 3-1 walk. L.J. doubled to center to put runners in scoring position. On the first pitch, Mason Fishback belted a 3-run moon shot to right, his first homer of the season. Trey Stine walked on a 3-1 pitch. Brent Sakurai hit a single to center, putting runners at first and second with 1 out. Daniel Johnson cleared the bases again with his own three-run round-tripper to right, putting the Aggies up 9-2.

Sacramento State cut into the margin in the fifth, scoring two runs. Both runs scored a double to right center.

Besides scattering four runs, Marcel Renteria pitched a fantastic seven and a third innings, striking out seven Hornets.

The Aggies padded their lead in the sixth as Austin Botello poked a ball through the right side of the infield for a base hit. L.J. Hatch reached first after being hit by a pitch. Tristen Carranza grounded out to short, but moved Botello and Hatch into scoring position. Mason Fishback drove in his fourth and fifth RBI of the night with a double down the left field line. Trey Stine scored Fishback with a double to left, increasing the score to 12-4.

NM State added another run in the seventh as Daniel Johnson led off with a single through the right side for his fourth base hit of the night. Greg Popylisen moved Johnson to second as he was out on a close play after hitting a laser to short. During the next at-bat, Johnson stole third and then scored on an errant throw by the catcher.

The Aggies closed out the game in the eighth as L.J. Hatch led off with a single up the middle. Tristen Carranza was hit by a pitch. Mason Fishback drew a full count walk to load the bases. Trey Stine walked off the game with a RBI single down the left field line to defeat the Hornets 14-4.
